Abstract:
Electron accelerators are finding an increasing number of applications in our society. Examples of accelerator technology are found in everything from medicine to agriculture to homeland security. Larger scale facilities all the way down to table tops accelerators all require reliable source of electrons. Thermionic cathodes are well established as a robust technology with a long history of success across the spectrum of accelerator applications. The fundamental principle of thermionic emission captured by the Richardson-Dushman equation lends to the reliability of thermionic cathodes. The beam from this deceptively simple technology is affected by cathode composition, charge Image effects, Schottky effects, lensing effects by the grid or wehnelt, the Langmuir limit and so on.
