All,

If you used Remote Desktop Connection to connect to your desktop computer from home prior to moving to the TED building, you will find that it does not work now. It can be fixed with just a minor modification to the PuTTY configuration. This change is required because when you were in the Accelerator site, you were using an Accelerator IP and since your computer is on the JLAB network now, the fully qualified name of your computer has changed. Previously the fully-qualified name was <computer name>.acc.jlab.org. i.e. sftdbliss.acc.jlab.org. Now it will be <computer name>.jlab.org. i.e. sftdbliss2.jlab.org.

When you go home, start PuTTY, select the Saved Session that you use for Remote Desktop, press the Load Button on the right > in the left-hand window (Category) expand Connection> expand SSH > click on Tunnels > enter 3391 in Source Port > enter <computer name>.jlab.org:3389 (look at the existing one and duplicate it, except remove the .acc) in Destination > Press the Add button > select the previous entry <computer name>.acc.jlab.org:3389 and press the Remove button.

In the left-hand window (Category), click on Session (the very top) and you will be returned to the main screen, now press the Save button. This will keep the configurations that you just made. If you fail to do this, they will not be there the next time you try to use PuTTY and it will not work.

If you find that you were using your IP address i.e. 129.57.95.23, rather than the fully-qualified domain name before, you can find the fully-qualified name by doing the following on your work computer:

WinXP: Start > Run > "cmd" (no quotes) press enter key > type "ipconfig /all" (no quotes)
> Find "Host Name .....:" i.e. sftdbliss copy that and and put a "." (no quotes) after it > Find "Primary Dns Suffix ....:" i.e. jlab.org and add that after the "." i.e. sftdbliss.jlab.org in PuTTY: back in "Connection>SSH>Tunnels" enter 3391 in Source Port, enter <computer name>.jlab.org:3389" in Destination and press the Add button; Click on the old configuration and press the Remove button. Click on Session (top of left-hand window) and then press the Save Button. This will keep your new changes so you can use them again in the future.

Win7: Start > All Programs > Accessories Run > "cmd" (no quotes) press enter key
> type "ipconfig /all" (no quotes) > Find "Host Name .....:" i.e. sftdbliss copy that and and put a "." (no quotes) after it > Find "Primary Dns Suffix ....:" i.e. jlab.org and add that after the "." i.e. sftdbliss.jlab.org in PuTTY: back in "Connection>SSH>Tunnels" enter 3391 in Source Port, enter <computer name>.jlab.org:3389" in Destination and press the Add button; Click on the old configuration and press the Remove button. Click on Session (top of left-hand window) and then press the Save Button. This will keep your new changes so you can use them again in the future.

If you have difficulty with this, please submit an ACE-PR and we will contact you in an effort to clear things up.

Resepctfully,

David
