Theo pointed out that in the past, patching left the system disk full.  I checked and the system disk was 100% full.  This also includes the /var filesystem.  /var being full will cause all sorts of problems.

I removed a bunch of old kernel, kernel-devel packages and a bunch of unnecessary things like LibreOffice and thunderbird.  I got it down to 70%
