I'll be around on Wednesday if you want help unboxing them. Afternoon works best for me. Thanks for handling all that.

Subject: [ace] ESH concerns with use of Lithium Ion Ups Batteries

FYI,
I was contacted by Jen from ESH about some of the new ups's we use with lithium ion batteries.
They wanted to know how many we had, where they were installed and where/how they are being stored.

I met with Jen and Tim Minga (JLAB fire marshal) to show them what types we have and where they are being used and stored.
The use of Li-ion batteries are new to them as well and they just want to make sure we are using/storing them safely.

Their concerns were as follows:
1. Li-ion batteries are considered hazardous material
2. If they get damaged and/or catch fire they are almost impossible to extinguish. They require a special type of fire extinguisher.
3. Storage location of the ups's with Li-ion batteries.
4. Identifying the locations where these are installed.
5. If there happens to be a fire where 1 of these units are, the fire department needs to no do to the hazardous material and risk of explosion.

They are going to evaluate the use and storage of Li-ion batteries and get back to us.
They said that they may have to identify an approved area for these to be stored.

On a side note, when I was showing them where 1 of the ups's is installed in the North Linac, they spotted the location of our recent (end of year money) UPS's that we have stored in the North Linac. They are stored there because at the time of delivery, there was no other place for them.

There concern with this is:
1. There are a couple of Li-ion units there.
2. They are still in the cardboard boxes which is considered combustible material.

I explained to them that this was a short term solution as we normally don't have that many come in at one time. They seemed ok with that as long as we get them moved and out of the boxes fairly soon.

The only action item for us at this time is to unbox the ups's in the NL and store them in an appropriate location. Shawn F. said there is an empty metal rack unit in NL11 that we could store these on until we get them installed.

On Monday I will start unpacking and moving these to the storage rack in NL11. If anybody is available to help, that would be great.

I also asked if we should hold off purchases of any more Li-ion ups's and she said no, but just make sure that we select the box on the PR for hazardous materials. That way she will be notified.
