I am eager for the transition. Please let me know as soon as you
have a test workstation, as I have a lot of work to do with the
certified software. I propose we update the C++ version convention
we have on rhel-7 of C++11 to be the highest fully GCC implemented
version on rhel-8; which is probably C++17.

We have gotten to the point where RHEL 7 is
no longer supported (or able to build on) the current Dell
workstations. The current model 3240 is the only one we can
still order from Dell. We could perhaps order the older
models from a third party and we can definitely play tricky
down PC-nomics but this signals that we must start moving
towards RHEL 8 right away at least for user desktops(servers
and VMs should be fine for a while). I believe that this will
be easier than from 6 to 7 since we will have largely dealt
with the 32/64 bit transition. Additionally, the user
interface in RHEL 7 has always been awful and any improvement
in RHEL 8 will be welcome.
