Marco,
Thank you for your message, we agree that rescheduling the meeting is preferable to let anyone participate to the manifestation. So we propose to postpone the ALERT general meeting by a week. If anyone has an issue with the new dates, please let me know rapidly, we might be able to adjust by a day or two within next week.
Best regards,
---

Dear Raphael,
on June 10 the HPS collaboration and the CLAS12 collaboration will attend to the virtual manifestation [ https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.shutdownstem.com_&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=xvIrZb1p8HoRayKD1Sz8zPzqi4-qHfiBCWqgj3oMbOQ&m=i4dbf6FPCZ4SiJ6cFOvoMd0HVWO7tK7fClxb4Fjv9bc&s=Kr-iMssFuoZ6N5lVcciEVKsOHX8zLxfhM-0YbBJNrVY&e= | https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.shutdownstem.com_&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=xvIrZb1p8HoRayKD1Sz8zPzqi4-qHfiBCWqgj3oMbOQ&m=i4dbf6FPCZ4SiJ6cFOvoMd0HVWO7tK7fClxb4Fjv9bc&s=Kr-iMssFuoZ6N5lVcciEVKsOHX8zLxfhM-0YbBJNrVY&e= ] promoted for the killing of George Floyd by stopping any research activity and attending the HPS meeting for a general discussion (see HPS message below).
As Hall-B we are going to discuss it tomorrow at the Hall-B meeting but considering the message sent around by Sturat last week, I'm pretty sure that there will be a shared feeling to attend.
This is going to clash with ALERT meeting: this message is to ask you for a rescheduling in a way that you and the rest of the ALERT group will be able to join the discussion on Wednesday.
I know that this can be complicated but I guess we all should express our solidarity in such a dark time.
Cheers
Marco
Dear HPS Colleagues and Friends,
Wherever you are in the world, I am sure you are aware of the death of George Floyd at the hands of law enforcement officers in Minneapolis, only the most recent example of a repeating horror visited upon our communities of color but affecting us all as a defining element of our social fabric. Many have chosen this moment to take a stand and demand change. In recognition of this, a number academic groups are planning to #Strike4BlackLives next Wednesday to show solidarity with this movement, including #ShutDownAcademia, #ShutDownSTEM, and a call from members of the particle physics community, Particles for Justice: [ https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.shutdownstem.com_&d=DwIFAg&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=ErLkbYGWd8oSAZ70ywHxhA&m=GmpX3kc1OH5SQfSUje_oQeaGXprP05Wj6BQzj-uCC8w&s=QXouF-dtm85StcR81ffD7YljWsixMjezOyvXGfWpro8&e= | https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.shutdownstem.com_&d=DwIFAg&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=ErLkbYGWd8oSAZ70ywHxhA&m=GmpX3kc1OH5SQfSUje_oQeaGXprP05Wj6BQzj-uCC8w&s=QXouF-dtm85StcR81ffD7YljWsixMjezOyvXGfWpro8&e= ] [ https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.particlesforjustice.org_&d=DwIFAg&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=ErLkbYGWd8oSAZ70ywHxhA&m=GmpX3kc1OH5SQfSUje_oQeaGXprP05Wj6BQzj-uCC8w&s=dfscMdiGzImul8fpcidYptIcAeTUjTnPTSd2Uq5K3J8&e= | https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.particlesforjustice.org_&d=DwIFAg&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=ErLkbYGWd8oSAZ70ywHxhA&m=GmpX3kc1OH5SQfSUje_oQeaGXprP05Wj6BQzj-uCC8w&s=dfscMdiGzImul8fpcidYptIcAeTUjTnPTSd2Uq5K3J8&e= ] HPS will not be holding our scheduled meetings on Wednesday to allow members who are planning to participate to focus their attention and efforts on that day to affecting meaningful change. While there are many levels on which to participate in such action, both personally and professionally, some of us would like to include a discussion of actions related to our work as academics and scientists that are relevant to our operation as a scientific collaboration. Towards this end, I am proposing that those who are interested meet at our regular meeting time on Wednesday for an open discussion of these issues and what we, as a collaboration and as members of our own institutions, can do to address inequities that are part of the same underlying injustices that have brought us to this moment.
I am happy to moderate and/or take notes during this meeting, but if others would like to volunteer to take on those roles, I would encourage you to please step forward.
Best,
Tim

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR June 3, 2020
SUBJECT: A Message of Unity Dear Colleagues,
We hear you and we stand united.
By now we all know of the horrific death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and have watched the subsequent protests and demonstrations. We acknowledge that there is a problem, and we know a lot of people are hurt, angry and scared, especially our African American colleagues and friends.
I recognize that these sad events come on top of an already stressful time as the nation grapples with the coronavirus. During times like these, it’s important that we come together as a community, remember our guiding principles, continue to put words into action, and be there for one another.
I, and many of us, will never know what it’s like to be pulled over because of the color of our skin. Some of us may not feel the anguish as personally and viscerally from the horrific events in Minneapolis. Others feel this anguish and outrage very personally as these recent events are yet another reminder of how much work remains to be done to reach the goals of equality that our nation strives toward. But we can stand together as one Jefferson Lab community with those who do and have experienced these inequities personally and frequently.
As an international scientific laboratory, we promote a diverse and inclusive community because it is our greatest ally in our quest for scientific progress. Our Jefferson Lab community comes from all over the world. We arrive at the lab with vastly different backgrounds and experiences. And those are things that make life at the lab much richer and more rewarding for everyone.
One of the great things about working in a scientific community is that it’s built around the challenge of tackling the most fundamental questions we human beings ask about the world around us. During this difficult time, I want to both affirm, and renew, our commitment to tackling these problems. We will continue to make Jefferson Lab a more inclusive and welcoming place to work, as well as build a workforce that is more representative of society at large. We have real work to do on each of these goals, and have some important initiatives underway:
* First, we are expanding our outreach and education programs. We will seek to inspire and support the next generation of scientists, engineers and technicians by engaging them with opportunities at the lab.
* Second, we will double-down on efforts to attract, hire, train, promote, and retain a diverse and qualified workforce; especially those underrepresented members of our community.
* Third, we will deepen engagement. I realize that many in our community are feeling deep sadness and strong feelings. I want you to know that we are here to listen to you. I want to encourage any who are struggling to reach out; reach out to your colleagues and friends, and [ https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__jlab.us11.list-2Dmanage.com_track_click-3Fu-3D1de9c43e6d5e45ff0ecd664cd-26id-3Daa8c244cda-26e-3D5ca410db8a&d=DwMFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=cT85urgHZUaHiqadfr4upyzP6oyfQ6aQ42fHUMY3Haw&m=Tn7fVquq-yVnIG1njnMrZNlaB9udJ2y_3_i3gGPE4c0&s=_vrzbWVZeWtiH8iSbPSZtDqzRpKsM7M8CJR_VNaY1eA&e= |
make use of our Employee Assistance Program resources ] .
No doubt you have read about Steven Uwajeh joining Jefferson Lab as our Diversity & Inclusion Program Lead. Jefferson Lab’s leadership, D&I Council and staff will be working closely with Steven to drive these important goals.
Finally, we all play a part in making our world more just, equitable, tolerant and respectful. Let’s join together in making Jefferson Lab a model to the community, nation and the world.
