Jefferson Lab is participating in a Statewide Tornado Drill that is
scheduled to occur tomorrow (Tuesday, March 20) at 9:45 a.m. Everyone
at Jefferson Lab not involved in critical work is expected to participate.
At 9:45 a.m. Jefferson Lab will send out a drill Tornado Warning
Site-Wide Alert email and page. Lab ES&H staff will activate the lab's
new Tornado Warning Siren. If you are near a NOAA Weather Radio, you
should hear the Tornado Warning drill message -- the tone alert and
message.
In response to the drill announcement, you should:
. Close your office door behind you as you head for your "take cover"
area.
. Go directly to your "take cover" area.
. Take a "drop, cover and hold" position. This means crouch as low as
possible to the floor, facing down and covering your head with your hands.
For more information about Jefferson Lab's Tornado Response Procedure,
visit Chapter 3510, Appendix T-3 in the ES&H Manual at:
http://wwwold.jlab.org/ehs/ehsmanual/3510T3.htm. To hear what the new
Tornado Warning siren sounds like, go to the Tornado Response Procedure,
Appendix T3, and click on the tornado icon or the "emergency warning
siren" links.
*Take Cover Guidance*
Take a moment now or first thing Tuesday morning to determine your "take
cover" area for the drill (closest to where you anticipate being at 9:45
a.m. Tuesday). If you don't know where it is, check the Emergency Plan
posted on the wall or safety bulletin board in your work area, or where
you plan to be.
Close your office door as you move to a take cover area. Go to the first
floor of a sturdy building. Take cover in windowless, interior hallways
or conference rooms, under interior stairwells or in restrooms. Stay
away from windows.
Individuals in trailers, sheds or vehicles or working outdoors should
seek immediate shelter on the first floor of nearby sturdy buildings, or
in approved below-ground facilities.
While moving to your "take cover" area, advise people along the way that
might not have gotten the message, that a tornado drill is underway and
to take cover immediately.
Stay in the take cover area until 9:55 a.m. At that time the drill will
end and regular work should resume.
Tina Menefee, JLab's emergency manager, will conduct a short survey
after the tornado drill. The survey link will be included in the drill
email sent out tomorrow.
Thank you very much for your attention to this important matter.
