Folks:
It's time to cast a final vote for names for Jefferson Lab's 10 new C100
cryomodules.
Hundreds of names were submitted and a committee was appointed to sort
through the names to determine the most popular.
To simplify the vote, the committee divided the most popular names into
four categories.
Each category has 10 names.
To vote for your favorite category, please use the link below. It will
take you offsite to SurveyMonkey:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/F6BQ9VD
Voting will close at 5 p.m. on January 9, 2013.
Below are the proposed categories and names. The explanations were drawn
from the nominations.
-----------
**
*JLab Descriptions: *
This category contains words that describe the spirit, culture and
mission of the Lab.
**
Research- JLab's mission is basic research.
Education- Education is at the heart of our mission, and includes
students of science and engineering, the general public, grade school
classes and members of Congress.
Frontier- The Lab is at the forefront of basic nuclear physics research.
Curiosity- The motivation behind all scientific discovery.
Discovery- The result of scientific investigation.
Determination- The ability to see an effort through to its conclusion in
spite of difficulties.
Endurance- The power to carry on under hardship.
Innovation- Novel approaches that add value, sometimes in unanticipated
ways.
Perseverance - A quality of JLab staff who worked on these modules.
Future- Looking ahead to a time when the upgrade is complete.
*Physicists*
This category contains names of physicists, now deceased, who made major
contributions to the science that underpins JLab's research.
Einstein- Nobel 1921. Photoelectric effect. General relativity.
Hatchett- Discoverer of Niobium, the metal used for our SRF cavities.
Kelvin- Lord Kelvin's work (William Thomson) in the field of
thermodynamics led to the definition of the absolute temperature scale
bearing his name.
Rutherford - Nobel 1908. Discovered proton, alpha particles.
Thomson- Nobel 1906. Discoverer of the electron.
Chadwick- Nobel 1935. Discoverer of the neutron.
Fermi- Nobel 1938. Induced radioactivity. 1st nuclear reactor in Chicago.
Feynman - Nobel 1965. Quantum electrodynamics
Isgur- Led the Theory Division at JLab. He has been described as a
brilliant scientist, good leader and a consummate gentleman.
Onnes- Nobel 1913. First to liquefy helium. Discoverer of
Superconductivity. (No longer has a road onsite named for him).
*Nuclear Physics*
This category is comprised of terms that relate directly to our research
program. Nine terms are physics-related and one term refers to the
machine that enables our research.
**
Gluon- An elementary particle that works as an exchange particle for the
strong interaction between quarks. What the first experiment in Hall D
will study.
Lepton- An elementary particle that does not undergo strong interactions.
Baryon- A subatomic particle made up of three quarks.
Boson- Particles that obey Bose-Einstein statistics.
Hadron- A composite particle made up of quarks held together by the
strong force. Protons, neutrons, baryons and mesons are hadrons.
Meson- An elementary particle comprised of one quark and one anti-quark.
Parton- A point-like building block of the hadron. Nuclear physicists
use CEBAF to study the structure of hadrons -- such as protons, neutrons
and pions -- in terms of their partons (quarks and gluons).
Quark- An elementary particle that comes in six flavors. They are not
observed directly or found alone.
Strong Force - One of the four fundamental forces along with
Electromagnetism, Weak Interaction and Gravity.
Beam Weaver- The ability for CEBAF to interleave beams at different
energies and currents into multiple experimental halls.

*Historic Places and Faces*
This category represents influential historical figures and sites in the
region.
Thomas Jefferson - The Lab's namesake and one of our country's founding
fathers.
Christopher Newport - Leader of the expedition that brought English
colonists to the Jamestown settlement.
Powhatan- A Native American tribe whose territory included the part of
Tidewater Virginia where the Lab is sited.
George Washington Carver - An African-American scientist and inventor
who shaped Southern agricultural economics by creating a market for
peanuts and other crop alternatives to cotton.
Newport News- The city where the Lab is located.
Jamestown- The first permanent English settlement in the United States.
Williamsburg - Capital city of colonial Virginia and home to the second
oldest institution of higher education in America: the College of
William and Mary.
Monticello- The Virginia estate of Thomas Jefferson.
Yorktown- The geologic layer of ancient shells and sand that supports
the CEBAF complex is known as the Yorktown Formation.
Chesapeake - The Bay that is a prominent feature of the region.
