Jefferson Lab Campus-Wide Phone Outage: Saturday , Sept. 12
Jefferson Lab’s landline telephone system will be down on Saturday , Sept. 12, 8 a.m-noon. The outage will permit equipment upgrades. Across Jefferson Lab, the outage will disrupt landline telephone services, voicemail and fax machine services. This outage will also affect Jefferson Lab and university phones in the ARC, but not the commercial tenants in the ARC.
To Get Help and Report Emergencies During the Outage:
- Use a cell phone to call 911.
- After you are advised to hang up by the 911 Dispatch Operator, immediately call the Jefferson Lab Security cell phone at 757-342-9868 . Advise Security of the 911 call, the nature of the emergency and the location of the emergency.
- Or activate the closest fire alarm box if no cell phone or coverage to alert Security of your issue. (Security will send an officer to investigate; however response times will vary.) And if or when possible, follow up with a call to the Security cell at 757-342-9868 to advise them of the situation.
Inquiries during the outage can be made to Jefferson Lab Security’s cell phone at 757-342-9868 . For more information regarding this outage, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.
IT Systems Maintenance Day Set for Tuesday , Sept. 15, 5-10 p.m.
The IT Division is planning a maintenance period for 5-10 p.m. on Tuesday , Sept. 15. During this time, there will be a 15-20 minute network outage to all central services starting at around 5:30 p.m. During this outage, access to all central file servers (J, K, L and M drives), web servers, mail servers, etc., will be unavailable. All incoming email will be queued and delivered once the networks come back online. There will also be updates to various Common User Environment web servers during this time. Each web server outage will last no more than 30 minutes, though, and all web servers will be up and available by 10 p.m.
In addition, there will be several software updates and patches to CUE-managed computer operating systems. The default version of Mathematica on CUE will be updated to 10.2, and the default version of Maple will be updated to Maple 2015. Older versions will still be available via the CUE "use" command once the new versions are made the default. Java 1.8.x will be installed on all CUE-managed Windows desktops and servers, and Java 1.7 will be removed, as it is no longer supported and has several documented insecurities. Finally, updates to CUE-managed software, such as Firefox, will be released to all Windows Desktops, and patches for Windows and Linux will be released, as well. Plan on rebooting your system to finalize patch installation when requested, but no later than Friday , Sept. 18. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.
