Last week, as a worker was descending a stepladder, the worker slipped
on the last rung of the ladder. The worker reacted by tightening their
grip on the handle they were using to steady their descent.Their
shoulder temporarily and suddenly supported their body weight, resulting
in an injury to that shoulder.
We can point to a number of events over the past few years that occurred
because the worker lost focus of their situational awareness, usually
towards the end of a task. Two such examples, ducking under a pipe and
working on a LCW canister, resulted in serious injuries to the worker.
The lesson learned from these events point to a need to maintain focus
until the job is safely completed. Please maintain your focus until the
job is done and your feet are safely and squarely on the ground.
