Roads is impacted significantly by both hurricanes/tropical
storms and
non-tropical storms (nor-easters). Both can cause significant
problems due to
wind and flooding. William Sammler will discuss mid-Atlantic
region hurricanes,
with a focus on Virginia and the Tidewater area. His talk will
cover the
historical record of mid-Atlantic hurricanes and a comparison to
recent events.
He will also discuss region-specific vulnerabilities that
hurricanes present
and suggestions to minimize risk. Due to ocean temperature
cycles that are not
well understood, hurricane activity has been at an above normal
level since the
