Dear Colleagues:

It is my great pleasure to inform you that after an extensive search,
Dr. Michael Pennington has accepted a position at Jefferson Lab as the
new Associate Director for Theoretical and Computational Physics at
Jefferson Lab.

Many of you know Mike, who has served as a member of the laboratory's
Program Advisory Committee (PAC) since 2007. He is currently a
Professor of Mathematical Sciences & Physics and Dean for Educational
Outreach at the Durham University in England. His research focus is in
the theoretical and phenomenological study of the strong nuclear
force, and he has more than 185 publications to his credit.

In addition to his work for PAC, Mike has served on a variety of
international science bodies, including participation as a member of
the CERN SPS Committee and as a member of the DAΦNE Physics Working
Group in Frascati, Italy. In 2009, he was named an Outstanding Referee
by the American Institute of Physics.

You can read more about Mike's career and his appointment in a news
release that will be posted on our website and on Insight.

I ask all of you to join me in welcoming Mike to Jefferson Lab.

At this time I also want to thank David Richards for his extraordinary
work as the laboratory’s interim head of theory. Dave will continue
as theory head until Mike begins his duties on July 1.

Finally, I wish to recognize the members of the search committee who
did such an outstanding job: George Sterman from SUNY Stony Brook;
David Kaplan from the University of Washington; Witold Nazarewicz,
from the University of Tennessee and Warsaw University; and Jefferson
Lab's own Larry Cardman, Latifa Elouadrhiri, and Christian Weiss.

With Best Regards,
Mont
