has completed a search to
fill its vacancy in the Directorate left by the departure last
year of the
Chief Operating Officer. The extensive and thorough process
attracted a broad
field of applicants including some from outside the United
States. A short list
of excellent candidates was selected and interviews completed on
February 19,
20, 2016. As a result of this process, Jefferson Lab has decided
to fill two
directorate positions. These appointments are designed to
strengthen the
directorate and to facilitate the expansion of scope of the
laboratory as it
seeks to cement its position of excellence among the nuclear
physics
laboratories of the world and the science laboratories of the
Department of
Energy.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman";
mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman""><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span

mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">In addition to
that of Chief Operating
Officer, we have created a new position in the directorate with
the title Chief
Planning Officer. The responsibility of the Chief Planning
Officer will be to
coordinate and manage the allocation of laboratory resources and
budgets across
the divisions, including internally and externally funded
projects, and to facilitate
development of the Lab’s operations and research budgets with
the DOE Office of
Nuclear Physics. The portfolio of the Chief Planning Officer,
who will report
to the Director, will include the Budget Office, the Project
Management Office
and Director’s Office staff. We are delighted that Allison Lung,
who is
currently the Deputy Project Manager for the 12 GeV CEBAF
Upgrade and has
worked at Jefferson Lab for 18 years, has agreed to accept this
position, which
will ensure coherence across the laboratory. These
responsibilities will be
shared with critical oversight of the 12 GeV Upgrade Project
through its
completion.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman";

has accepted the position
of Chief Operating Officer. Mike comes to Jefferson Lab from
Pacific Architects
and Engineers where he was Vice President for Space System
Operations.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>Mike’s
experience includes leading a 1,300 person
contract responsible for the instrumentation, communication, and
information
systems used to command and control all space launches from Cape
Canaveral and
the Kennedy Space Center and a network of tracking stations
across the Atlantic
basin.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>Mike’s role will
include much of
the conventional portfolio of the traditional COO including
Environment,
Health, Safety and Quality, the Legal Office, Human Resources,
Information
Technology, the Business Office including Procurement,
Accounting and Finance, Facilities
and Maintenance, and Public Affairs. Of course, there are
certain of these functions
which, in case of need, have direct access to the Director. This
extensive portfolio
represents the support functions which are the vital
underpinnings to the
successful execution of the scientific mission of the
laboratory.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman";

will continue to take line
responsibility for the Accelerator, and Experimental Physics
division,
Engineering and Theory. The Deputy Director will concentrate on
the Science and
Technology mission of the laboratory. In this respect, the
Deputy pays special
attention to the strategic planning and the appropriate
alignment of the
mission of the laboratory with the guidance from the Office of
Science and the
Office of Nuclear Physics. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
