Colleagues:

Like the rest of the world, we are saddened by the horrific earthquake
and tsunami that struck Japan. The soaring death tolls, the many
injuries and the widespread damage are almost beyond belief.

The lab has strong connections with Japan, and we have been reaching out
to friends and collaborators.

We have users from Tohoku University in Sendai, the city nearest the
epicenter of the quake. Attempts to reach them have not been successful
at this time.

KEK and J-PARC, science labs involved with high-energy physics and
nuclear physics research, are reporting no injuries or deaths.

However, there was severe damage to the J-PARC's linac and other
facilities, and it is out of service. KEK also has ceased operations
and is evaluating damage, which it expects to be extensive.

KEK is providing updates on its website --http://www.kek.jp/

J-PARC also has established a limited website -
http://www.kek.jp/J-PARC/index.html

Please join me in expressing your concern and support for our Japanese
friends and colleagues and their families.

Mont
