Colleagues --
Today we are releasing the 2011 Department of Energy Strategic Plan
<http://energy.gov/media/DOE_StrategicPlan.pdf>, which outlines the
broad, cross-cutting and collaborative goals that stretch across our
complex. It is to serve as a blueprint for DOE to help address the
nation's energy, environmental, and nuclear challenges through
transformative science and technology solutions.
The Department's missions and programs are designed to bring the best
minds and capabilities to bear on important problems. It draws on the
diverse talents of our federal workforce, scientists and engineers from
national laboratories, academia, and the private sector in
multidisciplinary teams, striving to find solutions to the most complex
and pressing challenges.
The DOE Strategic Plan <http://energy.gov/media/DOE_StrategicPlan.pdf>
is organized into four distinct categories, including:
·Catalyzing the timely, material, and efficient transformation of the
nation's energy system and securing U.S. leadership in clean energy
technologies
·Maintaining a vibrant U.S. effort in science and engineering as a
cornerstone of our economic prosperity with clear leadership in
strategic areas
·Enhancing nuclear security through defense, nonproliferation, and
environmental efforts
·Establishing an operational and adaptable framework that combines the
best wisdom of all Department stakeholders to maximize mission success
I encourage you to take some time to review the plan. I'd also ask you
to tune in today, at 1 p.m. EST, to a webcast
(www.ustream.tv/channel/department-of-energy-doe
<http://www.ustream.tv/channel/department-of-energy-doe>) where I will
be discussing the new Strategic Plan, the outlook for the Department and
the leading role it will play in helping our nation create a new clean
energy economy. Employees at the Forrestal and Germantown facilities can
also view the discussion on channel 3 or 97 of their televisions, while
other facilities will have the option of accessing a satellite feed or
making alternate arrangements. I plan to take questions from DOE
employees. If you would like to submit a question for consideration,
please email it to StrategicPlan at hq.doe.gov.

Thank you for your hard work and continued service.
Steven Chu
