Dear Colleagues,

Last Fall you were asked to participate in a Diversity and
Inclusion (D&I) Climate Survey. This survey was a follow-up
to the one performed in 2014, and serves as a measure on our
performance as we have worked over the last 18 months to develop
our Integrated D&I Management System. I’m happy to share the
results of that survey with you.

First, let me say that I am especially pleased at the level of
participation in the survey. In 2014, 315 employees, 44% of the
eligible population, took the survey. In 2016, 471 of you, or 64%
of our population, took the survey. We also had close to 100
Users participate in this recent survey as well.

The survey had 14 questions, and in each case a higher awareness
of D&I issues compared to 2014 is apparent. The level of
awareness has increased on key topics such as the importance of
diversity and recognition of the potential for our own biases to
exist. The results are encouraging, and are attached for your
information and hopefully discussion.

The results of the survey have been briefed to the D&I Council
and Lab Leadership and a few actions have been identified. The
next step is to reach out the those of you who volunteered to be
part of focus groups to discuss identified areas in more detail
and explore solutions. We will also share the results with the
Users Group Board of Directors. Last Fall we held training on
"Barrier to Communication" for all supervisors; we are going to
make this training available to all of you as well.

Finally, we will reach out to an external organization to provide
us suggestions on how we can continue to make Jefferson Lab an
open and inclusive work environment.

I look forward to continued good efforts in this area.

- Bob McKeown, Acting Lab Director
