We have also set up a protected (vnc4Sane) vnc desktop at
twist.phys.virginia.edu:27

Try starting it with a local viewer. Make sure your viewer has the
option "shared" desktop selected, otherwise your connection will
disconnect other users. At JLab you'll need to tunnel with Putty,
following these instructions on the SANE wiki (protected link, log as
user hms pw sos)
