Dear BDX colleagues,
I write you concerning the message that Patrizia sent to the JLab community, related to the white paper currently being prepared to address the physics case for a 24 GeV energy upgrade at Jefferson Laboratory (see below) According to Patrizia’s message, the final goal is to have the white paper published on a referred journal.

In Sec. 8.4, “secondary beams”, the projected sensitivity for BDX at 24 GeV is reported (see below). I think that having the BDX at 24 GeV projection included in this work is really important. However, given that this result is going to be published in a journal, and thus available for the whole community, I think that, as BDX collaboration, we should discuss about how this result was obtained, and also how this is described in the text.

For example, I think that in the text the fact that this is only a preliminary estimate should be stated (where the backgrounds at all evaluated)?
Same for the detector arrangement: was the BDX at 24 GeV reach computed assuming the same detector configuration (detector dimensions and distance from the dump)? This cannot be the case, since the increased muons energy will require more shielding to range them out.

Finally, I find the format of this plot quite uncommon, since the X axis is reported in a linear scale, and not log scale.

I think that it would be important to have a dedicated BDX meeting for this next week.
What do you think about? Usually, we held BDX meetings on Friday, but Friday June 2nd is holiday in Italy. What about Thursday in the early afternoon?

Thanks,
Bests,
Andrea

== PATRIZIA’S MESSAGE ==

Dear colleagues,

You are receiving this message because you expressed

support for or participated in one of the many workshops

aimed at pursuing an energy upgrade to 22 GeV of CEBAF

with the goal of advancing the frontiers of our knowledge

across the spectrum of topics in nuclear physics. This

high-impact program at the luminosity frontier will open

up a rich and unique experimental nuclear physics program

that combines illustrious history with an exciting

scientific future.

After a year of intensive workshops, the editorial committee

has collected input from the community and assembled a

White Paper that outlines an exciting scientific program

for the future at Jefferson Lab. This document is openly

available in the following link

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__drive.google.com_file_d_1VQelVEu6Sz6Z9cxWV4nkrYMX7NzO1rUP&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=Ru7nA6zPBSFajtw1o6aZjchIV9Cs2SBk2RiVldzQhDc&m=KRegf5qzSbd24c7aNlX-euj2Qt4K894uUtQZBpUAVxVmwGOBjwTCbiFKSP-9cYCI&s=GXJfqSdFiTOzgjRSnQd3nlPoRKseQLGNvljoavMFFUg&e=

The initial author list contains the editorial committee

as well as some others that have made direct contributions to the

document, but we recognize that many beyond this initial list

are the creators of this program. This is a grass-roots effort

that started with conversations amongst the recipients of this

email. You have all contributed directly or indirectly through

participation in discussions, providing comments, and asking

questions. As such, we would like to invite you to sign the

document as a coauthor by completing this form:

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__forms.gle_aQ6TKqGC2dnwMuGK6&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=Ru7nA6zPBSFajtw1o6aZjchIV9Cs2SBk2RiVldzQhDc&m=KRegf5qzSbd24c7aNlX-euj2Qt4K894uUtQZBpUAVxVmwGOBjwTCbiFKSP-9cYCI&s=qY7WxpTGO6OH_LPT4EIXPMJ8K240P1Y0N3MRFrrc_w0&e=

There may be others that have expressed interest in this program

or contributed through discussions outside of the dedicated workshop

series. Please feel free to forward this message to others

and extend the invitation to sign as a member of the broader

community that generated this document.

We acknowledge that given the breadth of the program it is

challenging for a committee to represent the individual scientific

interests of all members of the community with the same emphasis

and detail as they would themselves. However, we are unified in

our goal of pursuing world class science.

The deadline to sign as an author is June 7 at close of

business (5 p.m. EDT). We are planning to submit to the arXiv

after deadline and submit for publication in a refereed journal.

On behalf of the editorial committee,

Patrizia Rossi
