Dear all,

I am a bit more optimistic regarding the possibility to
travel next year than the majority of the list, but of
course I fully understand that the financial risk must be
minimised. Having been now in some of these pure Online
events makes me appreciate a “classical” conference much
more than I had before the Covid-crisis (and I still have
the fondest memories of my first CHEP in Victoria). It has
been mentioned that not having a conference in 2021 might
make some younger colleagues miss the opportunity for
their first “big” paper during their current contract and
given how hard (impossible) it is to place some of our
technical work in other computing conferences this is I
think a real concern. Maybe around some of the proposed
“replacement” events one could organise a light-weight
special edition of a journal to give an opportunity for a
“real” publication? Of course even with a light-weight
editing process as customary for CHEP proceedings this is
still a fair amount of work.

It seems to me that in the mid-term what could be useful
to have for a big conference like CHEP is a kind of
standing account, (maybe fed by the occasional small
surplus?) which could be used as an “insurance” in
situations such as the present, so that the organizers of
future events have a bit more freedom when weighing cost
and benefit and risk. Of course we all hope that such an
event as Covid remains the rare exception.
