Subject: limitation on LTCC for fall run

Hi Folks,

I want to bring your attention to an issue that Stepan Stepanyan has raised as we prepare for the First Experiment. The CLAS12 baseline equipment ERR committee made a recommendation regarding the LTCC gas, C4F10, availability (it is expensive and hard to get). The recommendation is:

"Develop a plan to ensure there is sufficient C4F10 available for operation in Fall 2017, or demonstrate how the planned physics goals may be achieved without it."

In order to address this recommendation we need input from proponents of experiments that need the LTCC in their measurements. They must evaluate the impact of having only a fraction of the full LTCC on their physics outcomes. As it stands now ~2/3 of the LTCC will not be available, assuming RICH will be ready. If the RICH is not ready for the fall running, then 5/6 of LTCC will not be available. The bottom line here is that we have gas only for one sector and for one run (depending on the leakage rate that we do not yet know). There is little money available to buy more.

The ERR documentation, including the final report, is available at the following address (see page 7 for the recommendation).

To get feedback from the Collaboration I have set aside some time during my Final Remarks on Friday of the CLAS Collaboration meeting for discussion of this recommendation. If you are concerned about the possibility of not having the LTCC, please let me know.

Cheers,

Jerry
