Dear Iuliia,

This is a nice abstract and should be presented. However, I miss a bit the reason why you want to measure the same process on the free and the bound proton (in deuterium). The latter is obviously more difficult to do than the former. Is the main reason to study the bound proton to quantify possible nuclear medium effects on the proton? If that's the reason it should be mentioned as the main motivation. If that is not the reason (or not the only one), other motivations should be given.

Also, the term "most weakly-bound nucleus" sounds a bit awkward. Maybe better "least-bound nucleus" or "weakest-bound nucleus"?

Volker

Subject: [Clas_hadron] Abstract for APS April Meeting

Dear All,

the following abstract is to be submitted to the APS April meeting.

Exclusive reactions of meson photo- and electroproduction off protons are used to investigate the nucleon structure and the principles of strong interaction. Among them, the production of pion pairs plays a particularly important role, especially for W ≥ 1.6 GeV, where it dominates all other exclusive channels.

By now, exclusive reactions off free protons have been studied in considerable detail, while experimental information on reactions occurring off nuclei is scarce and mostly limited to inclusive measurements. This situation causes a strong demand for exclusive measurements off bound nucleons, and the deuteron, being the lightest and the most weakly-bound nucleus, is the best target for initiating these efforts.

This talk will introduce the quasi-free cross sections for the process of charged double-pion electroproduction off protons bound in deuterium extracted in the second resonance region with the CLAS detector. The talk will also focus on the analysis specificities caused by the Fermi motion of the initial proton and the final state interactions between the reaction final hadrons and the spectator neutron.

Best regards,
Iuliia Skorodumina.
