Dear Volker,
Thank you for passing along this sad news.
As you know, Jim was a wonderful colleague, and a key contributor to
Hall B. Much of the initial organizational plan for the CLAS
Collaboration benefited from his participation in the drafting of the
CLAS Charter, and Jim served as "e-mail nag" (in the days before Linux
and Outlook!) to keep things going. Working with his Catholic University
colleagues, Jim played a critical part in the design and construction of
the Hall B photon tagger. I know that Jim would be particularly excited
and delighted about the ongoing FROST experiment, representing in many
ways the culmination of his physics interests.
As a person, Jim was an enthusiastic and cheerful colleague, interested
in so many things. As the obituary noted, he was an avid "birder," and I
recall him identifying lots of birds in the trees around the lab.
Because of his illness, we have missed him greatly over the past few
years. We will remember him fondly as we continue to reap the benefits
of his many contributions to CLAS.
I am sure our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Sylvia, family and
friends at this time of great loss.
Sincerely yours,
Barry
