Dear PCSE Students, Colleagues, and Friends,

It is with overwhelming sadness that I have to inform you that our beloved colleague and friend, Dr. Rob Fersch, passed away tragically this weekend.

Rob joined the PCSE department almost 10 years ago as an expert in nuclear physics. He was a passionate and gifted teacher who always found ways to make the wonders of physics and its intricacies accessible to students at all levels. To do so, he was regularly seen wheeling physics demonstrations to and from his classrooms. In fact, Rob was a big proponent of hands-on science. He developed a diverse set of physics activities and demos, his “Physics Fun Park”, which was a popular attraction at many events such as CNU Open Houses, STEM Community Days, and Jefferson Lab Exhibits. Rob truly loved teaching, and he was exceptionally good at it!

Rob was also an accomplished researcher, published scholar, and trusted mentor. As a member of the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) Collaboration at Jefferson Lab he spent countless hours developing experiments, collecting data, and analyzing results. He particularly loved to involve students in his research, which he did throughout his time at CNU.

In short, Rob was a talented teacher, respected researcher, advisor and mentor to many students, and wonderful colleague. We will miss him tremendously.

Students and faculty who would like to speak with a counselor can contact CNU’s Counseling Services (https://cnu.edu/life/counseling/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__cnu.edu_life_counseling_&d=DwMFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=IbWk8zxXqrZbowqRjbpcbQ&m=FIe85DYCRB5YVsUFBCAJ1JcmjhkiC0u7nC8Zn4a-BfZ5D4F7UL3LgwlmVPu4wex7&s=YQfExHrPbg57kcVSfTHUqCrmQeLMrAM7bn9W_LGwiWs&e=>).

There will be a memorial service in the Pope Chapel later in the week of July 4th. Details will be forthcoming.

Sincerely,
   Anton Riedl
