Dear Colleagues,

On Friday, May 17 at noon, access to *.anaconda.com will be blocked from all Jefferson Lab networks for legal and licensing compliance purposes.

In 2020, Anaconda (Python Dev Env/Repo Manager) changed its licensing from open source to a commercial license. It now requires any organization with less than 200 employees (not including users) to buy a license. As part of their annual audit, Anaconda found what they consider to be a significant amount of their products being used at Jefferson Lab. As a result, they required that the lab procure a site license or discontinue further use, transmission, and/or dissemination of Anaconda’s proprietary data. This includes all documents, data, packages, and files downloaded from their Repository. Finally, they are requiring proof of clean scans showing no current use of Anaconda.

Working with Anaconda, we were able to identify those at Jefferson Lab using Anaconda (their distribution or their channels). The CST Division reached out to those users to determine if they were willing to pay for its use. We were unable to get a commitment from anyone to cover the licensing costs. As a result, the lab will block access to repo.anaconda.com this Friday. Furthermore, CST will remove all Anaconda software from Jefferson Lab computers and provide Anaconda proof that we are no longer using their software.

There are other distributions that support the Conda package management (Miniconda or Mamba) as well as other channels that are open source.
