Dear Nick et al.,
Here are my comments on the "Measurement of the helicity asymmetry E
... in the resonance region" paper that is out for CLAS Collaboration
review.
First of all, congratulations on getting this measurement
made. It is a long time in development, and you and the others have
succeeded in producing a well-presented and significant result.
I have just a few comments that are all related to the text, and not
anything to do with the analysis.
Line 36 & Ref. 1: This seems to be an exceptionally weak way to start
off the list of references: an article that does not exist yet. I
would remove this (non) reference.
Line 62-65: This sentence seems out of place and possibly
superfluous. You say "different..." without comparing to anything.
Only in the next sentence do you mention the (so far unnamed) previous
measurement. You sentence would be better placed in line 69:
"...world dataset. Our extraction...". On the other hand, you could
just remove your sentence without losing anything: it is a nearly
content-free statement.
Line 101: Use "uncertainties" instead of "errors"
Line 167: You give a value for the electron beam polarization here,
but it seems unlikely that this is correct for both beam energy
periods. Either give both values, or maybe just site some reasonable
average if they are similar.
Line 312: Section III.A There is text in this section that is
redundant with what was already said in previous sections. You could
reduce the reader's need for patience by streamlining some of the
discussion to say things only once, not two or three times. I don't
want to get into specifics, but if you read the paper for the first
time it does come across as somewhat unnecessarily wordy.
Fig 2: This figure is hopeless for publication as it stands. The
labels must be much larger. The usual AIP style guide, for instance,
specifies the minimum label size to be 2mm on the printed page.
Line 376: remove "...in great detail". That phrase makes it sound
like you are being excessively defensive. Just say what you did and
let the reader decide.
Fig. 3 caption. Missing a word near the end: "...CBELSA data WERE
included..."
It would be nice if, as a CLAS paper, you could promote other previous
papers from CLAS that dwell on the E observable. I'm not sure where
the ideal place is to insert such references. But perhaps at the end
of line 70 you can add the sentence:
"The experimental method used in the present study was also different from
other helicity asymmetry measurements by our CLAS collaboration used to
investigate neutron observables \cite{PhysRevLett.118.242002,
PhysRevC.98.045205 }." The full citations are below.
That is all for now,
Cheers,
Reinhard
