*Exp Nuclear/Particle Physics Tenure Track Faculty*
The James Madison University Department of Physics and Astronomy invites
applications for a tenure track faculty position at the rank of
Assistant Professor in experimental nuclear/particle physics or a
closely related field beginning August 2010. The successful candidate is
expected to initiate and maintain a vigorous research program involving
undergraduates and be an effective teacher at all levels of the
undergraduate physics curriculum, including courses for non-science
majors. The new faculty member is expected to take a leading role in the
applied nuclear physics program now being developed. The department has
21 full-time faculty members and ~100 students in our multi-track
baccalaureate-only program. Departmental research interests include
materials science, nuclear/particle physics, non-linear systems and
astronomy. In May 2005, the department moved into a new Physics and
Chemistry building. A significant part of the $2.7M in equipment funds
associated with the new building was used to acquire detectors and
instrumentation for the four existing nuclear/particle physics research
laboratories in support of research programs at Jefferson Lab, TUNL, and
Fermilab. A 15 MeV linear electron accelerator has been donated to the
department by the local hospital and we are negotiating for a second
one. Facilities to house these instruments and the applied nuclear
physics program are explicitly part of the university master plan.
Additional information about JMU is available online at www.jmu.edu and
about the department at http://csma31.csm.jmu.edu/physics/. Applications
are only accepted through web submission. For details on applying for
this position, visit csm.jmu.edu/physics/html/application.html. Review
of applications will begin on December 1, 2009. Applications will be
accepted until the position is filled. JMU is an equal
opportunity/affirmative action/equal access employer and especially
encourages applications from minorities, women, and persons with
disabilities.
Requirements
We seek outstanding candidates with an earned Ph.D. in experimental
nuclear or particle physics and relevant postdoctoral experience,
preferably in instrument/detector development. A demonstrated record of
teaching physical sciences or mentoring undergraduates is required.
