Abstract:
The Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) at BNL was built on the
conjecture that colliding nuclei of mass ~200 at sufficiently high
collision energies would lead to creation of an extended nuclear-scale
system over which quarks and gluons could move freely. The PHENIX
detector was designed on the supposition that leptons and photons would
be particularly useful probes of the strongly-interacting matter thus
created. I will give a brief overview of both RHIC and PHENIX and then
discuss the two significant surprises from the experimental program,
namely elliptic flow and jet-quenching, followed by a short look at more
recent studies of direct photon emission and heavy-quark behavior.
