Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position in the
field of experimental medium nuclear physics at the University of
Virginia to begin in Spring 2010. The successful candidate will be
stationed at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab).
The research interest of our group is focused on parity violation in
deep inelastic scattering (PVDIS) using both 6 and 11 GeV beam of JLab,
as well as studies of the nucleon spin structure using polarized 3He
targets. The successful candidate will be expected to (1) play a leading
role in preparation for the 11 GeV PVDIS program, in particular
simulation and construction of a large solenoid-based spectrometer
(SoLID); (2) play a leading role in R&D of the polarized 3He target at
JLab and in preparation for the 11 GeV A1n experiment; and (3) assist
the analysis of the 6 GeV PVDIS data which we collected at the end of
2009. He/she is also encouraged to participate in ongoing JLab
experiments, and in particular to develop his/her own ideas for future
JLab experiments.
The successful candidate will be expected to supervise both graduate
and undergraduate students. The appointment will be initially for one
year and is renewable based upon mutual agreement and continued funding.
Applicants should have a PhD in experimental nuclear or particle
physics. Experience with polarized 3He target, detector work, and
large-scale simulations would be an asset. Review of applications will
begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a statement of research
experience and interests, a list of publications, and arrange for three
letters of reference to be emailed to xiaochao at jlab.org (preferred), or
mailed to
