*25th Annual Hampton University Graduate Studies (HUGS) at Thomas Jefferson*
*National Accelerator Facility*
June 1-18, 2010
Applications are now being accepted for HUGS 2010 to be held at
Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia. The deadline for fellowship
consideration is April 12, 2010.
Through grant support from the United States Department of Energy
(DOE), the 25th Annual Hampton University Graduate Studies (HUGS)
Program at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility
Jefferson Lab) is scheduled to run from Tuesday, June 1 to Friday,
June 18, 2010. Students will arrive on Monday, May 31 and depart
on Saturday, June 19.
The HUGS Program at Jefferson Lab is a summer school designed for
second and third year experimental or theoretical nuclear/particle
physics graduate students who have finished (or nearly finished)
their course work. Students who are well into a research project are
encouraged to apply as well. Acceptance into the program is competitive.
The 2010 school will focus on experimental and theoretical topics in
electron scattering, QCD, strong interactions, nucleon structure, and
nuclear interactions of high current interest.
Speakers and topics to include...
Ralf Gothe, University of South Carolina, /Nucleon Resonance Structure
at Large Q2/
Nue Nakamura, Tohoku University, /Hypernuclear Physics/
Heidi Schellman, Northwestern University, /Parton Distribution Functions/
Marc Sher, College of William and Mary, /The Higgs and Beyond the
Standard Model/
Eric Swanson, University of Pittsburgh, /QCD and Heavy Mesons/
Kostas Orginos, College of William and Mary, /Hadronic Structure From
Lattice QCD/
Rodolfo Sassot, Buenos Aires, /QCD and Spin Physics/
While attending HUGS Program at the Jefferson Lab summer school
students will attend all lectures and seminars offered. The program
is simultaneously intensive, friendly, and casual. The lecturers are
internationally renowned leaders in their fields.
There will be many opportunities to interact with Jefferson Lab staff,
as well as the lecturers, other graduate students, and visitors. Students
receive insight into the type of physics to be performed at Jefferson Lab
in the upcoming years.
Funding limitations require us to restrict the number of fellowships
that will be awarded. Each fellowship will cover tuition, fees, room
and board, and reimbursement of most, if not all, of the student's
domestic, second-class round-trip airfare or mileage, whichever is
less. Foreign students' transportation reimbursement will include most,
if not all, travel to and from the point-of-entry into the United States.
Students will need to supply funds for incidentals, extra meals, etc.
To apply to HUGS at Jefferson Lab 2010 summer school, submit to the address
below a completed application, letter of request for consideration of
acceptance into the program, and at least one letter of recommendation
(the latter via e-mail is acceptable). Submission as such will automatically
place the student in the fellowship competition. The deadline for application
submission is April 12, 2010. Students should be notified by April 30, 2010
of acceptance.
