HDIce Post Doctoral Fellow - 10519

(TERM POSITION ENDING THREE YEARS FROM HIRE DATE)

DATE POSTED: JANUARY 21, 2010

SALARY RANGE: $47,600 - $71,600 (PD)

DUTIES:
A Postdoctoral position is available with the HDice group, working in
Hall B at Jefferson Lab with a new class of frozen-spin target, solid
hydrogen-deuteride. The target is polarized at high field (15 tesla) and
low temperature (10 mK), brought to a frozen spin state and then
transferred to a comparatively warm (0.3 K), low field (0.2-0.9 tesla)
open-geometry cryostat where it is used for reaction studies.

In 2010-2011, JLab experiment E06-101 will use longitudinally polarized
HD to search for new N* resonances in the gamma n -> K Lambda reaction
through a complete measurement of the cross section and 15 spin
asymmetries.

Solid HD is expected to retain its polarization with modest electron
currents. The use of transversely polarized HD, maintained in beam by
relatively low holding fields, will overcome the problem of the large
backgrounds that result from the deflection of the beam or atomic
electrons into the detector by conventional high-field dynamic
polarization magnets. A direct test with electrons on polarized HD will
be conducted at the conclusion of E06-101. Experiment E08-021 will
follow in 2011 with transversely polarized HD to extract Generalized
Parton Distributions needed to produce 2+1 dimensional tomographic
images of the proton and neutron.

A new HD cryogenic Laboratory is currently under construction and a new
dilution refrigerator is under development as an in-beam cryostat to
hold polarized HD inside the CLAS detector of Hall B. The successful
candidate will assist in the buildup of the new laboratory and the
low-temperature cryostats used with solid HD, in R&D to improve target
characteristics, and in the running and analysis of the E06-101 and
E08-021 experiments. The individual will also be expected to lend
general support to the joint efforts of the CLAS collaboration and its
detector.
 Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD in either Experimental Nuclear/Particle Physics or in
Low-Temperature Physics. A background in experiments using
electromagnetic probes to study the structure of nucleons or nuclei is
preferred but not required. Cryogenic experience is an asset.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae on-line and have copies of
any recent published or unpublished works, along with letters from three
references noting position number, sent to:
