POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION
UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS, AMHERST
EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR & PARTICLE PHYSICS
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position with the
Experimental Nuclear Physics Group at UMass, Amherst. The position is
for one year initially, with the possibility of renewal for up to three
years upon mutual agreement and availability of funds. The primary
responsibility of the successful candidate will be to participate in the
design of two new parity-violating electron scattering projects which
are being developed to exploit the large luminosity, high energy
electron beam that becomes available after the 12 GeV upgrade of
Jefferson Laboratory. These experiments will search for physics beyond
the Standard Model at the TeV scale and probe novel aspects of the QCD
structure of the nucleon. More details on the projects can be found
at http://people.umass.edu/kkumar/pv12gev.html
The candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the data
analyses of the HAPPEXIII and PREX experiments, both of which completed
physics data collection recently. These measurements will test low
energy QCD by probing the strangeness content of the nucleon and the
neutron distribution inside nuclei with unprecedented precision.
The successful candidate will have the flexibility to reside either at
UMass or at Jefferson Laboratory and will have the opportunity to
participate in other ongoing research of the group. Applicants must have
a Ph.D. in experimental nuclear or particle physics. Prior experience
with both software and hardware in accelerator-based experiments is
desirable. Applicants should send a CV, a description of research
interests, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent
directly to Prof. Krishna S. Kumar, Department of Physics, University of
Massachusetts, Amherst, MA 01003. Review of applications will begin
August 1, 2010. The start date can be as early as September 1, 2010. The
position remains open until filled.
The Physics Department is committed in its efforts to hire candidates
who will enhance the diversity and gender balance its faculty, staff and
students. We strongly encourage women and members of minority groups to
apply. /The University of Massachusetts is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer./
