Pizza Seminar Series Presents:
Spin, Nucleon Spin and Polarized Targets
*Jian-ping Chen*
Jefferson Lab
Abstract:
Spin physics has been a fascinating subject for over a century. Spin
physics
has produced numerous surprises and breakthroughs, including over a dozen
Nobel Prizes in both basic sciences and applied sciences. Nucleon spin
study
is still in the stage of trying to understand the basic properties while
it already
produced rich results with many surprises. JLab experiments have made an
impact in this worldwide effort. One of the keys to the success of the
nucleon
spin study is the fast development in polarized target technology. After an
introduction on the spin and nucleon spin study, the progress in
polarized targets
will be reviewed. Focuses will be on the spin-exchange polarized 3He gas
target
and the nuclear-dynamical polarized solid proton/deuteron targets.
