December 15 Briefs Excerpts:

*JLab Researcher Receives Award for Excellence in Service to Physics*

Cynthia Keppel, the group leader for experimental halls A and C,
recently received a major award from the Southeastern Section of the
American Physical Society (SESAPS) for her “excellence in service to
Physics.” Keppel was presented with the 2016 Francis G. Slack Award
during the Nov. 10-12 annual meeting of the Southeastern Section of the
American Physical Society, held in Charlottesville, Va. For more, see
the full article posted at:

*12 GeV Upgrade Update*

With the arrival of the Q3 magnet early this month, all of the major
components of the Hall C Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS) are now
on site. Two days after it was delivered, Q3 was in its cradle on the
spectrometer carriage and the iron yoke had been reassembled around it.
Its fully-installed twin, Q2, which arrived two months earlier, is
undergoing power tests at increasing currents. To date, it has been
successfully operated at more than 90 percent of the anticipated
operations current. See the briefs for more information.

*Submissions Due by Jan. 27 for JSA Postdoctoral Research Prize*

JSA is currently accepting nominations for the JSA Postdoctoral Research
Grant prize, which recognizes and supports the finest postdocs
affiliated with Jefferson Lab. The basis for picking the top candidate
includes a record of physics accomplishments, a planned high-impact JLab
physics program, proposed use of the $10,000 research grant, and promise
of further accomplishments in Jefferson Lab research fields in the
future. All entries must be emailed to Lorelei Chopard by Jan. 27, 2017.
See the briefs entry or the memo for details:

*New Energy Conservation Measure Being Implemented; Personal Appliance
Prohibition Reminder*

The Jefferson Lab Energy Conservation Policy is designed to provide
safe, comfortable conditions and energy efficient operation of heating,
cooling and lighting equipment throughout the site. To reduce energy
consumption and costs, air handling ventilation fans serving office
areas will automatically shut down at 5 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. Also,
prior to the holiday shutdown, please remove all personal (not Lab
owned) appliances including portable heaters, compact refrigerators,
coffee makers, microwave ovens, etc. from the site. These devices are
prohibited at the lab. They contribute to increased energy consumption,
impact the effectiveness of automated building temperature controls, and
can also represent an unsafe fire-hazard concern. During the holiday
shutdown, Lab security will conduct a site-wide survey to assure
personal appliances have been removed. See the memo for more
information:

*IT Maintenance Scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 20, 5-7 p.m.*

The IT Division will conduct a maintenance period on Tuesday, Dec. 20,
from 5-7 p.m.During this time, the dovecot servers will be replaced and
the external secure mail server (smail.jlab.org) will also be
replaced. While the systems are being replaced, these services will be
unavailable. Zimbra will be unavailable for about 30 minutes starting at
5:30 p.m. Windows and Linux patches will be deployed to all CUE managed
workstations and servers. Overnight, Tuesday night, Linux and Windows
servers may reboot causing short service outages. All services will be
back up and available by 7 a.m. on Wednesday. See the briefs for details.

*Personal Dosimeter Change Out to Begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20*

Jefferson Lab's semi-annual personal dosimeter change out will take
place starting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20.Have your dosimeter in its
place in the personal dosimeter racks no later than 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
This includes the dosimeters of all staff, students, users and
subcontractors.

If you need to use your dosimeter during the change out period on Dec.
20, bring your dosimeter to the Radiation Control area in the ARC
Library (1st floor) after 12 p.m. noon that day.
