Dear Colleague:

The second workshop on “Future Trends in Nuclear Physics Computing” will be held from May 2-5 at Jefferson Lab. The event will begin with an afternoon symposium with forward-looking topics (https://www.jlab.org/conferences/trends2017/symposium-poster.pdf <https://www.jlab.org/conferences/trends2017/symposium-poster.pdf>), followed by 2.5 days of plenary talks and discussions (https://www.jlab.org/conferences/trends2017/poster.pdf <https://www.jlab.org/conferences/trends2017/poster.pdf>).

The symposium, intended for a general audience, will take place on May 2 starting at 1:00 p.m. with four presentations that will set the stage with talks that will explore topical areas in Nuclear Physics (Scientific priorities, Computation, Experiment) for the coming decade with an introduction from Dr. Stuart Henderson, Director of Jefferson Lab. Confirmed speakers include Dr. Don Geesaman (ANL), Professor Martin Savage (University of Washington) and Stefan Hoeche (SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory). A light reception will follow.

In the 2.5 day workshop, we will examine our hardware and software strategy at a time horizon of ten years. Our goal is to work towards the definition of a common vision for Nuclear Physics computing and data and recommend future directions for development. In our discussions, we will adopt a data perspective and will focus on the following areas:

resource management and the interplay of I/O, compute and storage,
machine learning for enhancing scientific productivity and appropriate task based approaches,
software portability, reusability and common infrastructure components.

Our symposium and workshop is intended for both the Nuclear Physics and High-Energy Physics community and we particularly encourage young scientists to attend. The registration page is available on our website (https://www.jlab.org/conferences/trends2017 <https://www.jlab.org/conferences/trends2017>) with limited travel support for Ph.D. students.

Yours sincerely,

Amber Boehnlein, Markus Diefenthaler, and Graham Heyes (local organizers)
