ACCELERATOR SCIENCE / EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
The accelerator ran four-hall beam through the end of last week and over the weekend. A maintenance day was taken on Monday to address issues that had arisen over the previous week, and beam studies were conducted on Tuesday .

On Tuesday , the CEBAF Accelerator delivered first full-power beam in the 12 GeV era! The accelerator demonstrated 927 kilowatts combined power to Halls A and C for a brief period; it’s important to note that the accelerator’s operational limit is set at 900 kW for sustained beam delivery. As of Wednesday morning, the Cryogenics Group continued recovery efforts following a trip of the End Station Refrigerator Tuesday afternoon. The trip resulted from higher-than-normal pressure in the return lines from the halls, caused by a magnet system controller issue in Hall C’s Super High Momentum Spectrometer. More information can be found on the End Station Refrigerator in the linked briefing .

Hall A continues the MARATHON experiment run using the novel tritium target. The experiment is now running to access their largest value of parton momentum (x=0.82) to measure the elusive down to up quark (parton) ratio in the nucleon.

Hall C is continuing to obtain data for the first 12 GeV era physics run from this hall, searching for first evidence for the color transparency (CT) phenomenon from nucleons in nuclei.

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
Understanding hadronization and fragmentation of final states is key to further developing factorization concepts in hard collisions. A new paper studies the graphical structures that arise in descriptions of hadronization, classifies their associated spacetime properties, and shows that only certain configurations are consistent with the nonperturbative physics of hadronization. The results can help guide the future development of models of fragmentation or hadronization.

ESH&Q
Scald Prevention
Most people associate burns with flame. However, according to the U.S. Fire Administration, liquids and steam cause more burns than flames, with more than 400,000 scald-burns occurring annually in the U.S.

Common hot drinks, such as coffee and tea, can cause serious burn injury when served at 160º F. To prevent injury from hot foods and beverages, turn pot and utensil handles toward the back of the stove to prevent spills; use dry oven mitts or potholders when removing hot food from ovens, microwaves or stove tops; open heated food containers slowly, away from your face; stir and test foods heated in microwaves before eating; and check tap water temperature before submerging exposed skin.

COMPUTING
MacOS High Sierra Upgrade to Be Enabled Feb. 12
On Monday morning, Feb. 12, Jefferson Lab will enable all registered Macintosh systems to update to the latest MacOS version, High Sierra. This is a major update and can take up to an hour, so if you intend to update your system, plan your work accordingly. Also, in case there are unexpected issues with the upgrade, plan on installing the upgrade during the IT Division's Help Desk hours to ensure issues can be addressed promptly. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this upgrade, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

Network Updates Set for Thursday , Feb. 8
On Thursday evening, Feb. 8, starting at 5pm, the IT Division Network group will begin upgrading network equipment that handles the lab’s internet connections. It’s possible that there will be a few brief internet outages while this work is being performed. All updates will be completed no later than 7 p.m. If you have any questions or concerns about this work, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
JAG Seeks Design Ideas for 2018 Lab T-shirt
Your idea could become the winning design for Jefferson Lab's 2018 T-shirt! The Jefferson Lab Activities Group is seeking entries for the annual T-shirt design contest. Deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 2 . For more information, see the full memo .

JSA Accepts Applications for Graduate Fellowships
The JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program enables graduate students to work alongside Jefferson Lab researchers as they continue their academic studies and pursue research opportunities. This program is supported by the JSA Initiatives Fund, and applications are due March 9 . For more information, see the JSA website .

JSA Offers Sabbatical And Research Leave Support
The program provides living expenses for up to nine months to qualified faculty members to relocate to the Hampton Roads area to conduct full-time research at Jefferson Lab while on an approved sabbatical or research leave. The deadline for this JSA Initiatives Fund program is March 30 . For more information, see the JSA website .

Reminder: Voluntary Separation Program Applications due Feb. 14
A Voluntary Separation Program enables the lab to optimize its talent mix and provide room for upward mobility and growth of the junior staff. For more information, see the full memo .

Thomas Jefferson High School Wins 2018 Virginia Science Bowl
More than a dozen teams converged on Jefferson Lab bright and early on Feb. 3 for the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl. At the end of an intense day of academic competition, the team from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Alexandria, took home top honors. Read more here .

HISTORY ARCHIVE PHOTO OF THE WEEK

This week's photo of the week features the accelerator control room as it appeared in 1998. According to Tom Oren, "lots of quality electrons were delivered from that very room before it was gutted in 2004 and changed to its present configuration."
