12 GeV Upgrade: A New Era of Science
On Wednesday, May 2 , the Department of Energy and Jefferson Science Associates, LLC, held an event to highlight the successful completion of the 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade Project. The 12 GeV Upgrade: A New Era of Science ceremony is now available for viewing online.
ACCELERATOR SCIENCE / EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
Hall A is poised to complete the second of two experiments using the novel tritium target this week. The first experiment, E12-10-103, was a measurement of the neutron to proton structure function ratio in the tritium and helium mirror nuclei, which provides access to the much-sought-after ratio of up and down quarks in a nucleon. The second, E12-14-011, is a measurement of the proton and neutron momentum distributions in these same two nuclei, which is expected to reveal differences in momentum between minority and majority nucleons in a nucleus, a key signature of short distance pair interactions.
ESH&Q
Human Performance Improvement - Introduction
One of the lab’s agenda initiatives is the enhancement of Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) and Human Performance Improvement (HPI) is a natural fit. What is HPI? HPI is not a program but a philosophy that is built around five principles.
• People are fallible, even the best make mistakes.
• Error-likely situations are predictable, manageable and preventable.
• Organizational processes and values influence individual behavior.
• People achieve high level of performance because of the encouragement and reinforcement received from leaders, peers, and subordinates.
• Events can be avoided through an understanding of the reasons mistakes occur and the application of the lessons learned from past events (or errors).
HPI is not an EHS process; the benefits are universal and cross all functions. Formal education will begin in June for Sr. Management and line-managers and in August, we will start education for all personnel.
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tornado Warning Siren Test Set for Friday, May 4 at 10:30 a.m.
Jefferson Lab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m. on Friday , Dec. 1. Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise. Individuals planning to be in the Central Materials Storage Area (where the siren is located) while the test is taking place must have with them and wear two layers of hearing protection.
Commemoratives for 12 GeV Upgrade Dedication
To highlight the successful completion of the 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade Project, all members of the Jefferson Lab community will receive a commemorative photo album, which will be available for pickup in the CEBAF Center atrium on Tuesday, May 8 , and Thursday, May 10 , between the hours of 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Professional Training & Certification Courses are Just a Click Away
Human Resources is offering eLearning opportunities via Skillsoft, a global leader in eLearning that offers more than 165,000 courses, videos and books and 100 percent cloud access. A limited number of free Skillsoft (aka Skillport) accounts are available for use by JSA employees, thanks to PAE. For more information on this limited training opportunity, see the full memo .
2018 Summer TIAA-CREF Individual Counseling Sessions Announced
TIAA-CREF will be offering Individual Counseling Sessions, where you can discuss your personal financial situation with a TIAA-CREF financial consultant on a confidential basis. They will be available to discuss how to help you achieve your financial goals by investing in financial solutions, such as mutual funds, brokerage, life insurance and annuities. You can also schedule an appointment for the following dates: May 17 , June 6 , July 18 and August 15 . These appointments will be held in Support Service Center room 221. To schedule an appointment, call TIAA-CREF at (800) 732-8353 , Monday through Friday , 9 a.m.–8 p.m. (ET).
Save on Tickets for Kings Dominion and Other Attractions
Jefferson Lab employees can save up to 45 percent on early season tickets to Kings Dominion via Tickets at Work. The Tickets at Work site also offers discounts on tickets to other major theme parks and Broadway shows, as well as hotel and rental car reservations. Use company code JEFFLABS.
Jefferson Lab In the News
Several local news outlets covered the 12 GeV Dedication event. You can find an article, video and photo gallery posted on The Daily Press site and on The Virginian-Pilot site . A video has been posted on the WVEC-TV 13News Now site .
Colloquium on Neutrinos Set for May 9
While neutrinos interact only rarely with matter, there are special cases of these rare interactions that can be detected and studied. Kate Scholberg, Duke University, will present results of the first measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering - a process in which a neutrino scatters off an entire nucleus. “Detecting the Tiny Thump of the Neutrino” will describe the recent measurement of CEvNS carried out at the Spallation Neutron Source, the status and plans of the collaboration’s suite of detectors, and the physics we will learn from the measurements. The colloquium will be held May 9 at 3 p.m. in the CEBAF Center auditorium.
