Researchers Honored as APS Fellows

Jefferson Lab now has a few more fellows on campus. Four scientists affiliated with Jefferson Lab and based in Virginia have been elected to the status of Fellow of the American Physical Society. The APS Fellowships are a distinct honor bestowed by a physicist’s professional peers for exceptional contributions to the physics enterprise. Read more here .

ACCELERATOR / EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
Accelerator Operations Schedule Posted
The Experiment Scheduling Committee has posted an updated accelerator schedule .

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
Testing resonance hypotheses in the light baryon sector with data can be guided by model selection techniques, such as the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO). It is an automated tool to assess which resonances and which combinations thereof contribute in data description -- a question of fundamental interest to make connections between theory and phenomenology, but too tedious to be carried out by hand. The challenge is studied with synthetic data and then for the database of the simple reaction K - p → K Ξ , which is known to be plagued by systematic problems and scarce data.

ESH&Q
Test of Public Address System Set for 5:30 p.m. Tomorrow
On Thursday , Nov. 15, members of the Jefferson Lab Emergency Management Team will conduct the recurring test of the lab’s Public Address (PA) System – the live audible announcement feature – available through the Cisco phones. No actions are required or expected from members of the lab community with this test. The test interrupts any in-progress call on a Cisco phone, with active calls automatically put on “hold.” For more information, see the full announcement .

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT & LOGISTICS
Change in Designation for Sensitive Personal Property
The classification of Property items is changing due to the DOE assessment this past summer. The change concerns the definition of sensitive property, which will broaden the types of items that are now designated as sensitive property. This means that Jefferson Lab must now have accountability of those types of items that have a history of going missing. It also means that items such as portable powered hand tools, bench-top power supplies, and portable meters costing over $300 will be tagged and tracked. For more information, see the full memo .

New Automated Key Request System
Working with MIS, Facilities Management & Logistics personnel have developed a new automated key request system for use when requesting new keys. The system is live and is ready for your use. The link will take you directly to the request form, or you can go to the Facilities Management & Logistics page and find the link under “Fillable Forms.”

To begin your request, enter enough information into the system so that Facilities Management can identify the key that you are requesting. After you submit the key request, it will automatically be routed to the appropriate approving manager. Once the request is approved, the system will automatically create a facilities service request so that the key can be made. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the keys, contact Wayne Williams .

COMPUTING
IT Division Maintenance Period Set for Tuesday , Nov. 20, at 5 p.m.
The IT Division has scheduled a maintenance period for Tuesday , Nov.20, 5-8 p.m. During this time, there will be a few brief network outages while network equipment is updated. Also, patches will be released to Linux and Windows Desktop and Server systems. Expect intermittent and short service outages overnight while systems are patched and rebooted. Finally, plan on rebooting your desktop system by Nov. 21 close of business to finalize patch installation. If you have any questions about the planned maintenance, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

IT Division Continues Preparing for Roll Out of Microsoft Office365
The IT Division continues its work toward transitioning the email, calendar and business productivity software products to the Microsoft Office365 platform. Training sessions will be offered in advance of the transition every Tuesday and Thursday starting Nov. 27 and through the end of the year. The sessions will be offered in the CEBAF Center Auditorium at 2 p.m. on Nov. 27, Nov. 29 and Dec. 4. The remainder will be offered in CEBAF Center room F113 at 2 p.m. If you have any questions about the transition, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

Can't Wait to Make the Move to Office365? Migrate Your Email Now!
If you'd like to avoid the end-of-year rush and make the transition to Outlook for email early, email the IT Division Help Desk . Note that the lab calendar application will remain on Zimbra through the end of the year.
