Education Outreach in Accelerator Physics
For a decade now, Carlos Hernandez-Garcia spearheaded a program (https://www.jlab.org/news/stories/education-outreach-accelerator-physics) that brings undergraduate students from Mexico to Jefferson Lab to study accelerator physics.
------------------------------------------------------------
ACCELERATOR RUN
The CEBAF Accelerator has run well over the past week, with high accelerator availability and good beam quality for Hall A and Hall B. With the schedule change that was announced on Aug. 5, the summer run will now continue to Sept. 9 for those halls. Hall C has completed its summer run and is now in an installation period, and Hall D remains in its installation period.

In addition, the Nuclear Physics Experiment Scheduling Committee has issued its call for beam time requests (https://www.jlab.org/physics/accexp-schedule/beamreq) , with submissions due by Aug. 16.

------------------------------------------------------------
NEUTRON SPIN STRUCTURE FROM POLARIZED DEUTERON DIS WITH PROTON TAGGING
A recent publication (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__arxiv.org_abs_1906.11119&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=huYtXgHboamQCcudwMT5oQ&m=ztaoHtDM6tcLhTVksHKUHWtvZ_JEg96if5Uk1jeci5I&s=Y09PqHDUUFfJchTmrrZdkIA3B5ogBkxUujaWVrhMSqg&e= ) presented a theoretical framework for measurements of the neutron spin structure functions using high-energy electron scattering on the polarized deuteron with detection of the spectator proton, as will become possible with a future Electron-Ion Collider. The study shows that the measured spectator proton momentum can be used to eliminate the D-state depolarization and other nuclear binding effects, enabling precise extraction of the free neutron spin structure functions. The results can be used for next-generation simulations of spectator tagging with the EIC, whose feasibility was demonstrated in a Jefferson Lab LDRD project in FY2014/15.

------------------------------------------------------------

SLOW DOWN: FULL STOP
As a reminder, all staff and Users must adhere to traffic rules on lab campus including, but not limited to:
- Obeying traffic signs, such as speed limit signs and stop signs.
- Operating your vehicle with care, especially around pedestrians.
- Only parking in appropriately designated spaces.

Additional radar speed-notification signage is planned for Hadron Drive to alert drivers of their speed and to encourage them to slow down. Lab security will also be stepping up enforcement of safe driving practices while on campus and issuing citations. To refamiliarize yourself with the Traffic and Parking Management section of the Jefferson Lab Administrative Manual, go here (https://mis.jlab.org/mis/apps/portal/admin_manual/viewDocument.cfm?documentId=77117) .

On Thursday, Aug. 15, and Friday, Aug. 16., the right (southbound) lanes of Hogan Drive will be closed between Hofstadter Road and Rattley Road for the Tech Center Building One dedication event. Access to Hogan Drive is scheduled to reopen on Friday, Aug. 16, at 3 p.m. The right (outbound) lane of Hofstadter Road will close at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Aug. 14, and will remain closed through Friday, Aug. 16, afternoon.
Use these alternate routes when arriving to the lab:
- Enter via Lawrence Drive at Hogan Drive or Jefferson Ave.
- Enter via Hofstadter Road at Hogan Drive.

Use this alternate route when leaving the lab:
- Leave via Lawrence Drive at Jefferson Ave.

CALL FOR MENTORSHIPS
The high school Mentorship Program (https://www.jlab.org/memo/mentorship-program-seeking-volunteer-mentors) at Jefferson Lab is expanding, and the Science Education Team needs volunteers to accommodate the influx of students! If you are interested in learning more about what it takes to be a mentor, contact Carol McKisson (mailto:carolm at jlab.org) at x7560.

IT DIVISION MAINTENANCE AUG. 20
The IT Division is planning a systems maintenance period on Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 5 - 10 p.m. During this time, there will be an outage of all Management Information Systems services while patches are applied to the backend servers. All MIS services will be back online no later than 10 p.m. There will be an update to our external mail service at 5 p.m. Email from external sources may be shortly delayed but will be delivered. All email updates will be complete by 8 p.m. There will also be patches to Windows desktops and servers, including a new update for Windows 10 desktops. Additionally, there will be patches released to all Linux desktops and servers, including an update to RHEL7.7. Reboot your Common User Experience-managed desktop no later than Friday, Aug. 23. Finally, there will be short, intermittent outages to central services overnight, while the central servers are rebooted to finalize the patch installation. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the IT Division
Help Desk (mailto:helpdesk at jlab.org) at x7155.

IT DIVISION NETWORK UPDATES AUG. 20
The IT Division Network group will be upgrading the software on all wireless access points On Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. This will affect connectivity to wireless networks "jlab," "jlab_guest" and "eduroam."

TWO-FACTOR AUTHORIZATION FOR OFFICE 365
The Department of Energy is requiring the IT Division to enforce two-factor authentication on all Office 365 accounts. The IT Division is currently in the planning phase of this update and will provide more information as updates become available.
