Dear SULI/VFP Participants and Alumni,

Hope you are doing well at the host DOE laboratory/facility, school, or your new position. In coordination with the Office of Science's Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship and Visiting Faculty Programs for building and sustaining a strong pipeline of highly skilled DOE scientific and technological workforce, we would like to introduce you to an exciting opportunity for conducting graduate thesis research at DOE national laboratories/facilities, Office of Science Graduate Student Research(SCGSR) program.

The SCGSR program's 2019 Solicitation 1 cycle is now accepting applications. Applications are due 5:00pm Eastern Time May 9, 2019. Detailed information about the program, including eligibility requirements and access to the online application system, can be found at: https://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fscience.energy.gov%2Fwdts%2Fscgsr%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7C3ed0df11cd814b8334a808d6980f599b%7Cb4d7ee1f4fb34f0690372b5b522042ab%7C1%7C0%7C636863589022678173&sdata=ZIkl2Cl5mqoBChNEFEJI0SNDNN8MRyMc%2BPw6RrXomOI%3D&reserved=0>.

As a selected participant in the SULI/VFP programs, you have already established a good foundation for collaboration and career development with DOE national laboratories/facilities. You may build your application to the SCGSR program based upon your research project, experience, and network established at your host DOE laboratory/facility as a SULI/VFP participant, and also bring in possibly new elements and collaborations for advancing your graduate study toward a Ph.D. objective. We invite you to consider an application to the SCGSR program when it is applicable to your academic stage and study plan, particularly if you are now in a graduate program or considering graduate schools in the near future. If the program does not immediately apply to your current academic stage and plan, having the knowledge could help enrich your options for career planning efforts. Please check out Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) specifically for students, advisors, and DOE laboratory scientists athttps://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/frequently-asked-questions/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fscience.energy.gov%2Fwdts%2Fscgsr%2Ffrequently-asked-questions%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7C3ed0df11cd814b8334a808d6980f599b%7Cb4d7ee1f4fb34f0690372b5b522042ab%7C1%7C0%7C636863589022678173&sdata=GMLs9ibtx6ivpSEHFNLLZYRhgYAbRUq47cTgWFdDpgQ%3D&reserved=0>.

The SCGSR program supports supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory/facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist for a period of 3 to 12 consecutive months-with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission. Detailed information about the program, including eligibility requirements and access to the online application system, can be found at: https://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fscience.energy.gov%2Fwdts%2Fscgsr%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7C3ed0df11cd814b8334a808d6980f599b%7Cb4d7ee1f4fb34f0690372b5b522042ab%7C1%7C0%7C636863589022688182&sdata=BoolWyNWNcupbJv4t8g5Zf6Q3%2Fh7UPAlJEGWaR7%2BN08%3D&reserved=0>. Since its inception in 2014, the SCGSR program has provided support to over 410 graduate awardees from more than 120 different U.S. universities to conduct thesis research at 17 DOE national laboratories plus General Atomics/DIII_D.
The SCGSR program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science's Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS), in collaboration with the six Office of Science research programs offices and the DOE national laboratories/facilities, and program administration support is provided by the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE).
