Dear Jefferson Lab User Community,
It is with a very sad heart that I report the passing of Jefferson Lab’s past physics division associate director, colleague, and friend Dr. Larry Cardman.
Larry received his bachelor’s and doctorate degrees in physics from Yale University in 1966 and 1972, respectively. In 1973, he became an assistant professor at the University of Illinois, where he was first promoted to associate professor in 1978 and then later to full professor in 1982. At Illinois, he served as principal investigator on the NSF grant supporting the Nuclear Physics Laboratory there, and during this time, he took sabbatical leaves at the Centre d'Études Nucléaires de Saclay and at Jefferson Lab. Larry joined the Jefferson Lab staff as deputy associate director for the Experimental Physics Division in 1993, and he served as the associate director for physics from 1997 to 2011.
During his time at Jefferson Lab, Larry drew on his experience as a scientific user and research lead to help the fledgling CEBAF inaugurate its experimental research program. He ushered in the start of CEBAF’s original 4 GeV science program and initiated many important processes that we still use today, such as the experiment readiness review process and the hall safety walkthroughs. Larry always had an eye for the future. He propelled the Jefferson Lab science program forward first with a transition to the CEBAF 6 GeV program and later by making the case for the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV CEBAF upgrade. These efforts resulted in more than one hundred completed experiments and doctorial theses during his tenure. In addition, his tireless efforts to unite nuclear physicists with one voice in support of the 12 GeV upgrade contributed to the project’s success.
Throughout his career, Larry was lauded and looked up to for his thoughtful efforts on behalf of nuclear physics and his fellow researchers. He was named a Virginia Governor's Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia in 2001 and was a fellow of the American Physical Society. Larry also served on the DOE/NSF Nuclear Sciences Advisory Committee, as well as on a variety of other boards and program advisory committees.
Even in retirement, Larry stayed engaged with the community, helping to foster new scientific initiatives such as the Jefferson Lab positron program and continuing to offer his advice, wisdom and support to the lab’s ongoing research programs.
Larry’s accomplishments and friendships will be fondly remembered by those who knew him, and his passion for nuclear physics and his amazing advocacy for our field will be deeply missed.
