Dear Colleagues,

The news that Stuart Henderson will be stepping down as the Director of Jefferson Lab came as a genuine surprise to the community. Under Stuart’s guidance over the past seven years, the lab has evolved to overcome many challenges and achieved many successes including a steady run of the 12-GeV program, the development of the EIC project, and the expansion of Jefferson Lab to a multi-purpose laboratory with the new High Performance Data Facility. The Jefferson Lab User Organization (JLUO) Board of Directors expresses its sincere appreciation for Stuart’s collaborative attitude and forward-looking leadership of the lab’s research program in nuclear physics.

We note that the highest priority of the 2023 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science is “to capitalize on the extraordinary opportunities for scientific discovery made possible by the substantial and sustained investments of the United States.” The world-class 12 GeV Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility is one of those investments. As Jefferson Lab enters a transition time in leadership, management, and programs, we would like to reaffirm the strongest support of the growing JLUO to nuclear physics research with the 12-GeV program, including the MOLLER and SoLID experiments, as well as our enthusiasm and commitment to develop the positron-beam project and the 22 GeV upgrade initiative.

Jefferson Lab and the members of the JLUO have a central role to play in achieving the scientific goals for nuclear physics laid out in the 2023 long range plan. The JLUO Board of Directors looks forward to continued close collaboration with Chief Research Officer David Dean under the guidance of the future Director Kim Sawyer as we, along with our colleagues in the user community, pursue Jefferson Lab’s mission to deliver world-leading nuclear science.

Sincerely,

Yordanka Ilieva (University of South Carolina, JLUO Chair)
Matthew Shepherd (Indiana University, JLUO Chair-Elect)
Ioana Niculescu (James Madison University, JLUO Vice-Chair)
Marco Contalbrigo (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, JLUO Past-Chair)
