Call for Nominations: Associate Director for Nuclear Physics

We’re very grateful for Dr. Hallman’s many contributions as Associate Director (AD) for Nuclear Physics (NP). As we begin the process to identify a new AD for this critical program. Dr. Linda Horton, Associate Deputy Director for Science Programs, will continue to serve as Acting AD for NP in the interim.



As we move forward with our effort to recruit a successor, I am writing to request your help in identifying candidates for the position of Associate Director of the Office of Nuclear Physics. The NP portfolio includes research programs and scientific user facilities to understand the forces and particles of nature as manifested in nuclear matter. The program fosters research to provide new insights and advance our knowledge on the nature of matter and energy and to develop the scientific knowledge, technologies, and trained workforce that will be needed to underpin the Department of Energy’s missions for nuclear-related national security, energy, climate, medicine, and commerce.



I am seeking suggestions for candidates for the Associate Director position, including self-nominations. Each nominated individual will be sent a letter with information on the position, including how to apply, and will be encouraged to submit an application. The Associate Director of NP is responsible for the overall management of the NP program, including strategic program planning; budget formulation and execution; project management; program integration with other Office of Science activities and other DOE offices; interagency and international liaison; and management of the federal and rotator technical and administrative staff in the NP program office. The incumbent serves as one of the Associate Directors of the Office of Science six science programs. The position is within the ranks of the U.S. government’s Senior Executive Service (SES). Members of the SES serve in key positions just below Presidential appointees.
