The Gary McCartor Fund, honoring Gary's scientific and professional leadership, was established in 2008 owing to a generous donation by Gary's wife, Sheila McCartor, and donations by Gary's personal friends and colleagues. The fund continues to support young scientists due to regular support from these friends and colleagues as well as from the many institutions sponsoring Light Cone meetings. Gary was particularly keen to see that young researchers had opportunities to participate in forefront research in our field. Accordingly, ILCAC plans to award a young researcher(s) who works in the field defined by the mission statement (https://www.ilcacinc.org/about-ilcac/) of ILCAC and detailed in the White Paper (http://ilcacinc.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/ILCAC-WP-FINAL-201309.pdf), with a travel award of up to $2000 to attend Light Cone 2026 at Stony Brook, June 22-26, 2026 (https://indico.cfnssbu.physics.sunysb.edu/event/598/). The conference fee will also be waived for the awardee. An announcement of the recipient(s) of the award will be made by ILCAC. Please send your email nomination (limited to 1200 words) with a brief CV (up to two pages) of the nominee to the email address [crji at ncsu.edu] before the deadline, January 31, 2026. This ten-days school is designed for Ph.D. students and early-career scientists interested in gaseous detector technologies or planning to enter the field. The program combines morning lectures by world-leading experts with afternoon hands-on sessions, offering a deep dive into modern gaseous detector systems such as: * Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGDs) * (Multi-)Resistive Plate Chambers ((M)RPCs) * Wire-based detectors Topics will include detector physics, signal readout, simulation, design, manufacturing, and real-world applications. Students will also have an opportunity to present their own research in a dedicated poster session. Registration is free for students. Attendees are responsible for their travel, accommodation, and personal expenses. Due to space limitations, admission will be competitive. The morning lecture sessions will be open to the broader community, with options to attend in person or virtually (registration required). For more details and to apply, please visit the official website: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1572535/ We kindly ask you to share this announcement with colleagues, collaborators, and students who may be interested. We look forward to welcoming you to East Lansing in July 2026! An item on the agenda is to plan for the annual meeting with management across divisions at the lab that will take place on January 7-8. This meeting is an excellent time for the BoD to have in depth discussions with relevant members of lab leadership about issues related to the user experience and the efficiency with which we can pursue our research and teaching missions at Jefferson Lab. If you have concerns you would like to raise to the BoD as we prepare for this meeting, you can do so in a couple of ways. You can submit issues through this Google form, which can be done anonymously if desired although leaving your name lets us follow-up with you. You can also directly contact any member of the JLUO BoD and discuss your issue with them. Wishing you all a great holiday season! Cynthia (Thia) Keppel, Associate Director for Experimental Nuclear Physics We are sharing with you that Thia, who has served as the associate director for the Experimental Nuclear Physics Division, is contemplating a new opportunity within the laboratory as a principal scientist. In this role, she will transition to an individual contributor position, allowing her to focus more deeply on scientific innovation. Thia has identified special projects that align closely with our scientific mission and long-term goals. Douglas Higinbotham will serve as the acting associate director for Experimental Nuclear Physics. Douglas, with a renowned nuclear physics career at Jefferson Lab for almost 25 years, has held the title of Experimental Nuclear Physics operations director for the past three years. He is a graduate of DOE?s Strategic Lab Leadership Program and is an Oppenheimer Science and Energy Leadership Program Fellow. I have full confidence in Douglas? ability to step into this role and continue supporting the Experimental Nuclear Physics mission. Andrei Seryi, Associate Director for Accelerator Operations Andrei, who served as director for Accelerator Operations, is contemplating a new opportunity within the laboratory as a principal scientist. In this role, Andrei will shift to an individual contributor position, allowing him to concentrate on specific scientific operations and strategy. Mike Spata will assume the role of acting associate director for Accelerator Operations. Mike, currently the deputy associate director for accelerator operations for the past seven years, has been at Jefferson Lab for over 36 years. Also holding the distinguished title of Oppenheimer Fellow, Mike's extensive experience and proven track record in accelerator operations will be beneficial as he leads our accelerator operations team during this transition. Jefferson Lab will continue its long tradition in nuclear physics excellence, as its central scientific mission, and we remain fully committed to achieving the highest standards in CEBAF reliability and impactful science in support of our user community and with projects like MOLLER and the Electron-Ion Collider. Please join me in showing your support to Douglas and Mike while a national search is conducted to find permanent replacements for both leadership roles.
