Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to update you on the status of Jefferson Lab operations during the federal government shutdown, as was shared with staff members yesterday during two all-staff meetings.
* As of today, Friday, Oct. 31, we can confirm the continuation of full operations at the lab through Friday, Nov. 14.
* Lab leadership is actively working with the Department of Energy to find ways to extend operations as long as possible and we commit to keeping you updated if this information changes.
Please note these important updates related to the federal government shutdown and potential furlough impacts for the user community:
Remote Computing Access
If the lab were to furlough employees, the following measures will be taken until the furlough was lifted, and Jefferson Lab restarted normal operations:
* User access to Jefferson Lab computing systems would be suspended.
* E-mail access, access to internal web servers and file systems, and access to scientific and LQCD computing resources would be unavailable.
* Users will not be able to create virtual meetings using third-party services, such as Zoom.gov, using their Jefferson Lab login credentials. They would still be able to attend Zoom meetings created elsewhere if provided with the meeting login information.
Site Access
During a furlough:
* User access to Jefferson Lab facilities, including the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), will be prohibited.
* All scientific users, including students and visiting researchers, would not be permitted on site.
Please consult with your home institutions on your work and project expectations while unable to access the Jefferson Lab site or its computing resources during this time.
Residence Facility
The Residence Facility is expected to remain open; however, we advise you to remain cautious while planning for travel, meetings, and visits to the lab. Please coordinate with your primary Jefferson Lab contact to discuss any such plans, or other activities that could be affected by the government shutdown. For additional information on residence facility availability, please contact them at 757-223-1167 or visit https://sura.org/resfac21/.
As ever, we appreciate your patience in these uncertain times and deeply value your partnership.
With Kind Regards,
Thia Keppel
