<p class="Default">There were several instances in the recent months
where
trained Radiation Workers (all Jlab users) failed to follow proper
procedure in
handling Radioactive materials (RAM) as specified in Radiation
Worker Training
and the General Access Radiation Work Permit.<span style="">

<p class="Default">Typical RAM items handled at Jlab are targets or
target
assemblies, beamline components and other equipment that was used
in
experimental halls or accelerator enclosures. The Radiation
Control Department
(RCD) surveys and tags all such items with RAM labels.<span
style=""> </span>All RAM is subsequently stored in Radioactive
Material Areas(RMAs)<span style=""> </span>Under RCD
authorization, RAM can then be relocated to other designated RMAs
at Jlab. The
RCD keeps a RAM inventory and tracks all RAM using a dedicated
database. The
following rules apply:</p>
<p class="Default" style="margin-left: 0.5in; text-indent: -0.25in;"><span
style="font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: Symbol;"><span style="">·<span

stored RAM is
under the responsibility of the RAM custodian in any given RMA.</span></p>

</span></span></span>Notify and get RCD approval BEFORE moving
RAM
from one RAM area to another. The RCD can establish a new RMA in a

working location if necessary.</p>

disassembling
or modifying any RAM. Disassembly may create several pieces of RAM

</span></span></span>Never remove a RAM label without RCD

grinding or
machining on RAM. This may generate loose contamination that could
be spread to
