National Accelerator Facility
May 31-June 17, 2011

Applications are now being accepted for HUGS 2011 to be held at
Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia. The deadline for fellowship
consideration is April 12, 2011.

Through grant support from the United States Department of Energy (DOE),
the 26th Annual Hampton University Graduate Studies (HUGS) Program at the
Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) is
scheduled to run from Tuesday, May 31 to Friday, June 17, 2011. Students
will arrive on Monday, May 30 and depart on Saturday, June 18.

The HUGS Program at Jefferson Lab is a summer school designed for second
and third year experimental or theoretical nuclear/particle physics
graduate students who have finished (or nearly finished) their
coursework. Students who are well into a research project are encouraged
to apply as well. Acceptance into the program is competitive. The
2011 school will focus on experimental and theoretical topics in
electron scattering, QCD, strong interactions, nucleon structure, and
nuclear interactions of high current interest.

Speakers and topics to include...

Alberto Accardi, Hampton University/JLab, Deep Inelastic Scattering and
Global QCD Fits of Parton Distributions
Abhay Deshpande, Stony Brook University, Longitudinal Spin Structure
Rafaella De Vita, INFN Genova, Light-Quark Meson Spectroscopy
Vadim Guzey, Jefferson Lab, Nuclear Effects in High Energy Lepton-Nucleus
Scattering
Alexei Prokudin, Jefferson Lab, Theory and Phenomenology of Transverse
Momentum Dependent Distributions
Misak Sargsian, Florida International University, Quarks in Nuclei:
Introduction to Hard Nuclear Processes
Steffen Strauch, University of South Carolina, Hadrons in the Nuclear Medium

While attending the HUGS Program at the Jefferson Lab summer school,
students will attend all lectures and seminars offered. The program is
simultaneously intensive, friendly, and casual. The lecturers are
internationally renowned leaders in their fields. The students will be
housed on site at Jefferson Lab. There will be many opportunities to
interact with Jefferson Lab staff, as well as the lecturers, other
graduate students, and visitors. Students receive insight into
the type of physics to be performed at Jefferson Lab in the upcoming years.

Funding limitations require us to restrict the number of fellowships
that will be awarded. Each fellowship will cover tuition, fees, room and
board, and reimbursement of most, if not all, of the student's domestic,
second-class round-trip airfare or mileage, whichever is less. Foreign
students' transportation reimbursement will include most, if not all,
travel to and from the point-of-entry into the United States. Students
will need to supply funds for incidentals, extra meals, etc.

To apply to the HUGS at Jefferson Lab 2011 summer school,
submit to the address below a completed application, letter of request
for consideration of acceptance into the program, and at least one
letter of recommendation. Submission as such will automatically place
the student in the fellowship competition. The deadline for application
submittal is April 12, 2011. Students should be notified by
April 29, 2011 of acceptance.
