June 4 - June 22, 2012

Applications are now being accepted for HUGS 2012 to be held at
Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia.
The deadline for fellowship consideration is April 2, 2012.

Through grant support from the United States Department of Energy
(DOE), the 27th Annual Hampton University
Graduate Studies (HUGS) Program at the Thomas Jefferson National
Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) is
scheduled to run from Monday, June 4 to Friday, June 22, 2012.
Students will arrive on Sunday, June 3 and
depart on Saturday, June 23.

The HUGS Program at Jefferson Lab is a summer school designed for
second and third year experimental
or theoretical nuclear/particle physics graduate students who have
finished (or nearly finished) their coursework.
Students who are well into a research project are encouraged to apply
as well. Acceptance into the program is competitive.
The 2012 school will focus on experimental and theoretical topics in
electronic scattering, QCD, strong interactions,
nucleon structure, and nuclear interactions of high current interest.<span
Speakers and topics to include. . .

Maria-Elena Boglione, University of Turin & INFN Turin,
Transverse Momentum of Partons
Jozef Dudek, Old Dominion University/JLab, Insights into the Spectrum
of Hadrons from Lattice QCD
Josh Erlich, College of William & Mary, Dualities and QCD
Tanja Horn, Catholic University of America, Meson Electroproduction and
Imaging Studies
Paul Reimer, Argonne National Laboratory, Flavor Structure and
Electroweak Interactions
Larry Weinstein, Old Dominion University, Nucleons in the Nucleus

While attending the HUGS Program at the Jefferson Lab summer
school, students will attend all lectures and
seminars offered. The program is simultaneously intensive, friendly,
and casual. The lecturers are internationally
renowned leaders in their fields. The students will be housed on site
at Jefferson Lab. There will be many opportunities
to interact with Jefferson Lab staff, as well as the lecturers, other
graduate students, and visitors. Students receive
insight into the type of physics to be performed at Jefferson Lab in
the upcoming years.

Funding limitations require us to restrict the number of fellowships
that will be awarded. Each fellowship will cover
tuition, fees, room and board, and reimbursement of most, if not all,
of the student's domestic,
second-class round-trip airfare or mileage, whichever is less. Foreign
students' transportation reimbursement will include most,
if not all, travel to and from the point-of-entry into the United
States. Students will need to supply funds for incidentals, extra
meals, etc.

To apply to HUGS 2012 at Jefferson Lab summer school, submit to the
address below a completed application,
letter of request for consideration of acceptance into the program, and
at least one letter of recommendation.
Submission as such will automatically place the student in the
fellowship competition.
The deadline for application submittal is April 2, 2012.
Applications will still be accepted after this date but fellowships
will only be awarded to students submitting applications by the April 2
deadline.
All students will be notified by April 30, 2012 of acceptance.
