Gasoline or electric cars? Ethanol or gasoline? Local or imported food? We are constantly bombarded by environmental questions and by contradictory answers from "experts." Join Larry Weinstein, of Old Dominion University, who will cover the principles of estimating, introduce the "Goldilocks" categories of answers, and then look at some of the big (and small) environmental questions of our time in a Science Series talk set for Tuesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. in the CEBAF Center auditorium. Visit the web link for directions and more info.</div><div style="font-family: Arial; "><br></div><div style="font-family: Arial; "><b>Come Learn About U.S. Patent System Changes and Celebrate JLab's Bright Ideas</b></div><div style="font-family: Arial; ">When the America Invents Act goes into effect on March 16, it will introduce fundamental changes to the U.S. patent system. Michael Badagliacca, DOE Patent Office, will discuss how these changes will impact inventors at JLab in a seminar scheduled for March 6 at 11 a.m. in CEBAF Center room F113. He will discuss the America Invents Act, specifically address how the conversion from a "first to invent" to a "first to file" system will affect future patents, and answer questions on the new act. All members of the JLab community interested in learning more about the America Invents Act and its new provisions are invited to attend. Just before the seminar, JLab management and Technology Review Committee members will take a few minutes to give "Bright Ideas" recognition to lab staff that made patent disclosures of new Intellectual Property in 2012.</div><div style="font-family: Arial; "><br></div><div style="font-family: Arial; "><b>Colloquium and Public Lecture: Applications of Electron Linacs to Isotope Production</b></div><div style="font-family: Arial; ">The application of accelerators, primarily with positive ion accelerators, to isotope production has a long history of success. Electron linacs, in contrast, have played a very limited role in isotope production. D.P. Wells, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, will discuss electron linac-based photo-nuclear isotope production research, with an emphasis on several isotopes of interest for research and medicine. The colloquium is offered in the CEBAF Center auditorium at 4 p.m. on March 6.</div><div style="font-family: Arial; "><br></div><div style="font-family: Arial; "><b>Brown Bag Lunch Workshops with MIS</b></div><div style="font-family: Arial; ">Have you ever wondered how to send a letter of increase for a requisition? Want to know how to purchase something from the stockroom? Did you miss the E-Commerce training sessions in January? Management and Information Systems staff will host its first monthly brown bag lunch workshop on Thursday, March 7, noon-1 p.m. Each month, 30 minutes of informal training for a small subset of MIS applications will cover topics from simple "how to" examples to less frequently used features of the software. After the first half hour, staffers will open the floor for questions about any MIS application. A few developers will be in attendance, as will a few application owners, so there will be a wealth of knowledge in the room. The first workshop will cover the purchasing applications used at JLab: Requisitions, E-Commerce, Stockroom and Credit Card Log. Bring your lunch and questions and join us! Topics will include physics in all of the experimental areas at JLab, including the halls, accelerator and Free-Electron Laser, special presentations by prize winners and recent APS fellows, invited talks on neutrinos, RHIC spin physics and hadronic physics in Europe and Japan, and reports from lab management and from the funding agencies. As always, there will be a business meeting, graduate student poster competition, special lunch discussions for the graduate students and a reception.
