The IT Division is planning a systems maintenance window on Oct. 16, 5-10 p.m. During this maintenance window, Symantec Endpoint Protection on Windows systems will be upgraded; This update may require a reboot, so plan on rebooting your system by the end of the week. In addition, Windows and Linux patches will be released to all desktops and servers. Server systems will be rebooted overnight in order to finalize patch installation, so there will be short and intermittent service outages overnight while these systems are rebooted. <strong>Support Begins Soon for macOS 10.14 on Managed Systems and Support Ends for macOS 10.11</strong><br>
The IT Division will begin to officially support the latest version of macOS (10.14, Mojave) on Oct. 17. It will also be available for installation on this day. Depending on your current version of macOS, you may be prompted to complete extra steps before being permitted to upgrade. These steps should be completed while on-site and connected to a lab network. The installation should take roughly 45 to 60 minutes to complete, depending on the current version of macOS that you are running. The IT Division will drop support for El Capitan (macOS 10.11) in <span class="Object" id="OBJ_PREFIX_DWT4655_com_zimbra_date"><span class="Object" id="OBJ_PREFIX_DWT4703_com_zimbra_date">February 2019</span></span>. The recent detection of gravitational waves and associated electromagnetic emission from a binary neutron star merger has illuminated the physics of strong gravity and dense matter and has addressed long standing questions as to the origin of the heaviest elements in the universe. Daniel Kasen — University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab — will review our physical understanding of compact object mergers and will describe how observations of gravitational waves, high-energy photons and radioactively powered optical emission have important physical implications, including constraints on the speed of gravity, the equation of state of nuclear matter, and the nucleosynthesis of the heavy elements.
