University of Virginia Laboratory Instrument Maker - Machinist
The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia is seeking a Laboratory Instrument Maker (machinist) to support the research and educational mission of the department and school. The successful candidate will work with undergraduate and graduate students, research professionals, and faculty to fabricate, construct, and/or design instruments for research and instruction. Duties include advanced machining, welding/soldering/brazing, preventative maintenance on shop equipment, and teaching student shop course as needed. The successful candidate must possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, superior customer service in working with undergraduate and graduate students, research professionals, and faculty to fabricate, construct, and/or design instruments for research and instruction. Incumbent must possess problem solving skills and the ability to multitask in a high-paced academic environment. Applicants must have the ability to work both independently and as a strong team player; have demonstrated mastery of machine tool practices and safety; have the ability to work from sketches and verbal instruction; and understand the fundamentals of industrial design. Demonstrated ability to operate machines and tools such as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) mills and lathes to close tolerance is required. A high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of four years of experience in similar shop (e.g., "model shop" or similar position in academia or industry) are required. Completion of Journeyperson Apprenticeship Program; Machinist Certificate or Machinist Associate's Degree as well as basic computer skills are strongly preferred. Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding expertise and tool and die maker certification are preferred. CAD skills are preferred.
